  • Weekly Stock List

Black Friday. Cyber Monday. The retailers are out in force, with a massive marketing push to win your dollars during this prime shopping time before the holidays. We see some deals among the retail stocks themselves. Many retail companies just reported 3Q earnings and there was a clear divergence on which were popular with shoppers during the quarter and which were skipped over. The 3Q shopping season, which includes back-to-school, is an indicator of how retailers likely will perform during the even-greater and more-consequential holiday shopping season. Retailers achieve momentum by correctly identifying what is trendy at the time, and the stakes are high. For many, the holidays account for 17%-19% of yearly sales, this according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). For toy stores, it's even more (up to 26% of annual sales in just those two months). The NRF forecasts that overall retail sales will grow between 2.5% and 3.5%, to nearly $1 trillion, during November and December of this year. Based on 3Q earnings reports and our Argus BUY-recommended retail stocks, the following is our list of possible Black Friday deals in retail stocks.

  • The Argus ESG Model Portfolio

Sustainable Impact Investing, or ESG investing, is gaining traction not only with Argus Research clients but also with the global investment community. BlackRock CEO Lawrence Fink, who oversees approximately $9 trillion in assets, announced in January 2020 that his firm would be investing in companies that are making progress on sustainability. He doubled down in his January 2021 letter, calling on company managements to disclose their plans for making their businesses "compatible with a net-zero economy" by 2050. As assets have flowed in over the past 40 years, Sustainable Impact Investing has evolved. The discipline, originally known as Socially Responsible Investing, focused at first on excluding companies that conducted business in South Africa, or participated in industries such as tobacco, alcohol, and firearms. Performance of these initial strategies lagged, and the approach has been modified. Now, instead of merely identifying industries to avoid, the discipline promotes "sustainable" business practices across all industries that can have an "impact" on global issues such as climate, hunger, poverty, disease, shelter, and workers' rights.
