Tickets for the first five games at Gillette Stadium — being called Boston Stadium for the soccer tournament — went on sale at 11 a.m. on the MBTA’s mTicket app. Since the train is only for people headed to see the games, the app required users to show they had tickets, and the MBTA’s Commuter Rail X account replied to more than a dozen people who reported issues.

Among those with issues was Gianni Sellers, who said he’d splurged and bought tickets to the France and Norway match to surprise his son.

“Since I live on the Cape, I had to find a way to get there,” said Sellers.

He planned to take the special train service from South Station to Foxboro, but when he tried to buy tickets on the MBTA app, he couldn’t register using the email he used to buy his World Cup tickets.

“It’s very frustrating because … $80 a pop round trip to go from South Station to Foxboro is quite expensive and I’m willing to do that,” Sellers said.

MBTA representatives acknowledged that some customers did have difficulty registering their emails, but the vendor quickly resolved the issue. Ultimately, more than 15,000 train tickets were sold within hours of them being made available.

“We have had some issues with the mTicket app, but we recommend that the people who have had issues to call our customer service line and when they are ready to purchase those tickets again to come back to the mTicket app,” said Angel Donahue-Rodriguez, assistant general manager for external affairs at the MBTA.

Gianni said he finally got his express tickets hours later and was relieved he did not have to use his backup plan.

“I can only imagine getting an Uber or Lyft to Foxboro stadium, Boston Stadium, from South Station is going to be outrageous,” he said.

The teams playing the games shouldn’t have any issues getting to the stadium, however, and on Wednesday, we got an inside look at where one of them will be practicing during the tournament.

Bentley University will be the base camp for the French national football team. The players, one of the favorites to win it all, will be using Bentley Arena and the soccer field, and Bentley’s athletic director, Vaughn Williams, said they are working to make sure every detail is addressed.

“We have to have certain requirements that we have to meet, certain equipment we have to use,” explained Williams, “and to make sure it is playable the way it needs to be done.”

Bentley said France will be on campus for their first practice on June 11.

Police responded to a report of shots fired shortly after 7:45 p.m. on the 200 block of Blue Hill Avenue.

A victim was found and taken to an area hospital, police said. That person’s condition was not known.

Authorities did not say whether any arrests have been made.

The shooting remains under investigation.

While many are breathing a sigh of relief, some are also continuing to push back against President Donald Trump‘s threats against Iran’s “whole civilization.”

“This is a victory for the United States of America,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

“I’m sure you’ve heard the expression ‘TACO,’ ‘Trump always chickens out,'” said foreign policy analyst Mark Storella. “Yesterday was TACO Tuesday.”

The agreement forged at the last minute before a self-imposed 8:00 p.m. Tuesday deadline from Trump. Earlier that day, he wrote, “A whole civilization will die tonight.” In the preceding days, he had threatened to bomb power plants and bridges.

For some local Iranians, the pullback brought mixed reactions.

“To be honest, we were a little disappointed,” said local Iranian Reza Zadeh. “We need intervention, we need support to get rid of this regime. We were disappointed for that reason.”

Opponents of the war gathered for a rally Wednesday on Boston Common, calling for the fighting to end completely.

Despite the late diplomatic pivot, politicians, analysts and some of the president’s supporters are voicing concern and calling for Trump’s removal by impeachment or the 25th Amendment.

“I’m certainly grateful that the bombs have stopped for now,” said Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Massachusetts. “I’m appealing to Vice President JD Vance, to cabinet members, to be people of conscience, to invoke the 25th Amendment.”

“Threatening to wipe a civilization of 93 million people, with no differentiating between civilians and active war combatants,” said political analyst Erin O’Brien. “That is 25th Amendment-esque behavior.”

“I just want them to leave party politics out of this war,” said Zadeh. “President Trump did it and decided to face this demonical regime.”

All the while, an eye on what comes next with no guarantees the ceasefire will result in the war’s end.

“The basis for the agreement is not strong,” said Storella.

The two-week timeline would set the ceasefire’s expiration at April 21.

The office of the secretary of the commonwealth confirmed that Rollins pulled nomination papers, which candidates do when they seek to qualify for the ballot.

Rollins served as district attorney for Suffolk County — covering Boston, Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop — from 2018 until the start of 2022, when she stepped down to become Massachusetts’ U.S. attorney. She resigned in May 2023 after federal watchdogs determined that she used her position to influence a local election and lied to investigators.

Pulling papers to challenge current Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden doesn’t mean that Rollins is running.

Massachusetts’ primary elections are Sept. 1. For district attorneys, the qualification period runs from Feb. 9 to April 28 to gather registered voters’ signatures for certification, which then must be filed with the state by May 26 to make the ballot as a candidate.

The Patriots seem set with their top pairing at off-the-ball linebacker. Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss will both be back and should be given a crack to resume their duties as go-to options in the middle of Mike Vrabel’s defense.

But beyond them? Thin. 

Jack Gibbens signed with the Cardinals as a free agent, and Jahlani Tavai has been released. Marte Mapu was traded this week. 

There’s some potential depth currently on the roster in K.J. Britt and Chad Muma. But one could make the argument that the Patriots need to be in the market for a linebacker relatively early in this year’s draft in order to protect against an injury to one of their regulars at the position.

If that’s how the team views it, they’ll likely be looking for instinctive, high-motor players who’ve exhibited real pop as tacklers. Tough-minded, violent finishers who are open to playing in the kicking game could be welcomed, too.

Those were all traits that applied to Spillane and Elliss. The same is true for the bulk of the linebackers used most frequently by Vrabel during his time in Tennessee. Rashaan Evans, David Long, Jayon Brown, Dylan Cole, Azeez Al-Shaair and Monty Rice checked similar boxes for the Titans. They didn’t possess massive frames, but they were aggressive strikers with the instincts to rack up tackle numbers in the middle of the field and at (or behind) the line of scrimmage.

Day 1: CJ Allen, Georgia

The 6-foot-1, 230-pounder isn’t the most explosive linebacker in this year’s class. There are two from Ohio State who’ll be taken near the top of the first round who’ve earned that billing: Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles.

But what Allen may lack in terms of pop, he more than makes up for with his football IQ. Even if he’s not as violent as Vrabel would like on a snap-to-snap basis, he’s a tackle machine (First-Team All-American, 88 tackles in 2025) whose instincts keep him around the football. His football character and smarts make him a good fit, but if the Patriots want him, they may have to use their first pick.

Day 2: Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech

A former quarterback, running back and receiver at the University of Virginia, Rodriguez plays on the defensive side like someone who has an intimate understanding of what his offensive counterparts are trying to do. The unanimous All-American finished with 128 tackles and 11 for a loss in 2025, helping him finish fifth in the Heisman Trophy vote.

The 6-foot-1, 233-pounder lit up the combine with a 4.57-second 40 and a 38.5-inch vertical. He also clocked a very impressive 6.90-second three-cone drill, indicating that he’ll be able to change direction effectively when tasked with tackling better athletes at the next level. A high-effort player with a real nose for the football (seven forced fumbles last season), he’d be a solid fit in a locker room that values what Vrabel calls “ball disruption.”

Day 2: Josiah Trotter, Missouri

You want violent? Here’s violent. Trotter will come downhill and run through you on early downs. The question with him is whether or not he’s savvy enough to be on the field in passing situations at this stage of his career.

At 6-foot-2, 237 pounds he has the size and mentality to contribute as a tone-setting thumper right away. A first-team All-SEC honoree last season (84 tackles, 13.0 for a loss), Trotter only just turned 21 years old, making him one of the youngest players across positions in the class.

You’d assume some level of improvement when it comes to his awareness in coverage, given the proper coaching. Would that projection, combined with what he’s already put on tape, allow the Patriots to use a Day 2 pick on him? 

Day 2: Keyshaun Elliott, Arizona State

Vrabel was clearly interested in working with offensive tackle Max Iheanachor at Arizona State’s pro day, but he would’ve had the opportunity to see Elliott up close there as well. At 6-foot-2 and 233 pounds, he posted an impressive 4.58-second 40 time that day, as well as a 7.02-second three-cone drill. Elliott’s vertical (38 inches) at the combine was an eye-opener and indicative of NFL-caliber lower-body explosiveness.

There’s plenty on the field that Elliott brings to the table that Vrabel might like, too. He racked up 98 tackles, including 7.0 sacks, last season on his way to second-team All-Big 12 honors. He’s a violent hitter in the running game, and he’s considered a high-quality teammate. He plays with a level of physicality that would allow him to fit in in Foxboro defensively or on special teams. 

Day 3: Red Murdock, Buffalo

A second-team All-American with a whopping 142 tackles, 13.5 for a loss and six forced fumbles, Murdock is one of the most productive ‘backers in this class. He posted 156 tackles in 2024 and seven forced fumbles in 2024.

He was a captain who refused to leave Buffalo when he would’ve had a chance to transfer to a bigger program. Highly intelligent and with a thirst for contact, there’s not much the Patriots wouldn’t like about his game. He’ll be challenged by the jump in competition as a pro. His athletic traits don’t necessarily jump off the screen. And his work in coverage needs refinement. But in terms of his competitive spirit and on-field demeanor, he makes sense in New England.

Day 3: Aiden Fisher, Indiana

One of the James Madison transfers to follow coach Curt Cignetti to Indiana, Fisher quickly ended up as one of the top leaders for one of the best programs in the country. A two-time first-team All-American (combined 215 tackles in 2024 and 2025), Fisher was a captain as the Hoosiers completed their run to a national title.

At 6-foot-1, 232 pounds, he has enough in the way of size to qualify for this list. But it’s his motor that makes him the kind of player you could truly envision functioning in Vrabel’s defense. He may not hear his name called until Day 3 of the draft, but he seems like the kind of player who’ll outperform whatever expectations are attached to his draft slot.

Day 3: Bryce Boettcher, Oregon

Originally attending Oregon on a baseball scholarship, Boettcher walked onto the football team to play for coach Dan Lanning and ended up being a two-sport athlete for three years. Boettcher established himself as one of the best defensive outfielders in the country in 2024 and was drafted by the Astros in the 13th round that year. But in 2025, he focused on football and ended up being named second-team All-Big 10 as an instinctive and hard-charging linebacker.

At 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, Boettcher carries a walk-on chip on his shoulder and has a strike-you mindset that is unrelenting. He can overpursue at times, perhaps trusting his instincts too much in play-fake situations, but his want-to and potential on special teams could end up landing him in Foxboro.

Day 3: Jack Kelly, BYU

Kelly projects similarly as a fast-flowing linebacker with quality intangibles. Not hard to see him fitting in as a core special teamer — with the potential to grow into more — thanks to his attacking style and athletic traits.

A two-time captain at BYU, the 6-foot-2, 240-pounder was a Weber State transfer who grew up as a champion BMX racer, according to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler. He hates to miss time and projects as the type of player whose energy and physical play style will make him a coach’s favorite wherever he ends up as a pro. 

Day 3: Taurean York, Texas A&M

York won’t bring with him to the NFL the level of pop in his pads that some others on this list will. But his instincts are hard to teach. At 5-foot-11, 226 pounds, he may have moments when he’s overrun by bigger blockers. But he’ll consistently be in the right place at the right time.

A two-time captain (as a true sophomore and junior), York led the Aggies in tackles last season with 73 while starting in all 13 games. His ability to align his teammates and sniff out offensive intentions give him the feel of having an extension of the coaching staff on the field. He’ll struggle if asked to man up on bigger targets in the passing game, and he’ll face obvious hurdles in the run game at times due to his size. But this is a position where knowing where to be can often prove to be more valuable than simply looking the part.

On Day 3? He’ll make someone happy because of the way in which he’s able to process that which he sees.

The crash occurred on Aug. 16, 2024, near Grape Island. Two people who were on a 21-foot Pisces sailboat that was involved in a collision with a 38-foot Sea Ray motorboat were critically hurt and taken to area hospitals. One of them, 70-year-old Patricia Cicalese of Walpole, died from her injuries.

John Reichardt, a 64-year-old Weymouth resident, was arraigned Wednesday on two counts of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and a charge of boat homicide by negligent operation, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said.

The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office was initially investigating the case, but asserted a conflict, leading the DA’s office in Plymouth County to become involved.

Prosecutors said evidence including surveillance footage, witness interviews and crash analysis were presented to a grand jury on July 9, 2025, and that it voted to indict Reichardt.

He pleaded not guilty at Wednesday’s arraignment. He was released on personal recognizance, with a judge ordering him not to commit any new crimes while he’s on release.

At the time of the crash, a witness who saw the two victims brought back to shore in Weymouth told NBC10 Boston that it appeared a woman was unconscious and a man had a serious gash to his leg. Authorities said the sailboat sank following the crash.

The driver of the motorboat and his wife were not injured and cooperated with police in the aftermath of the crash, authorities said at the time. According to court documents associated with the case, the driver told investigators he was going about 17 mph at the time of the collision and did not see the sailboat until it was too late. He said he attempted to power down his vessel and steered hard to the side in an effort to avoid the collision.

Investigators said at the time that there was no evidence that the driver of the motorboat was in any way impaired.

The motorboat had multiple scrapes, rubs and cuts on its port side, investigators said, there were numerous pieces of wood strewn across the bow and along the starboard side, and there were blood stains on the rear starboard side of the swim deck. Both forward handrails were damaged and bent.

Prosecutors and state police detectives from the district attorney’s office said Tuesday that they have assumed jurisdiction and are working with the Massachusetts Environmental Police to investigate the death.

Court documents show that investigators seized a Garmin electronic unit from the sailboat that has the ability to record and save data related to the operation, position, speed and direction of the vessel. The U.S. Coast Guard took possession of the unit on Monday for forensic examination and extraction of pertinent data. A detailed inventory of any data gathered will be filed with the court as soon as it is completed.

The C’s playoff run ended in a five-game loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. A few months later, Kyrie Irving and Al Horford left in free agency.

It was also a difficult season for Jaylen Brown. He took a huge step in his development during the 2017-18 season, especially in the playoffs when he played a prominent role with Irving and Gordon Hayward sidelined due to injuries. The Celtics advanced all the way to Game 7 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals.

Brown saw his playing time and many of his stats decrease in 2018-19. He also went from making 70 starts in 2017-18 to just 25 in 2018-19.

During that offseason, Brown reached out to NBA legend and friend Tracy McGrady and asked for his advice on the situation. McGrady helped convince Brown to stay in Boston. T-Mac saw the potential Brown and Jayson Tatum had as an elite duo.

McGrady talked about that conversation, and many other topics, on the latest episode of NBC Sports Boston’s Celtics Talk Podcast with Chris Forsberg.

“It’s fascinating,” McGrady said. “He’s very intelligent and a guy you suspect (would) have all the answers because he’s a student of the game and he wants all the information. For him to reach out to me to just come sit down and have a conversation, because it was heavy on his heart and his mind, and what he wanted to do. For me, it was just (being) the voice of reason because I’m not emotionally connected to Boston. I’m not emotionally connected to anything with Boston. My connection is with him and trying to give him the best advice as possible.

“I saw it was an opportunity — you got another player with you in Jayson Tatum, and the dynamic that you guys have created could be very dangerous, and given the organization and their winning ways, and them putting the necessary pieces around you guys — you’ve always been close when you’ve been together. It was just a matter of them figuring it out and working together and how they were going to pull everybody else up to get over that hump and win a championship. It ultimately happened, and he was the MVP of (that series). And now these guys have another opportunity to do that.”

Brown staying in Boston worked out perfectly. He has become an All-NBA player, and this season he is a legitimate MVP candidate. Brown and Tatum led the Celtics to their long-awaited Banner 18 with an NBA Finals triumph over the Dallas Mavericks in 2024. Brown also was voted Finals MVP.

With the 2026 playoffs on the horizon, Brown and Tatum have a chance to win their second title together over the next few months. The C’s are the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, and a lot of experts consider Boston to be the favorite to win the Eastern Conference.

Police seized five unregistered guns from a Market Street home after allegations that the child showed a firearm to at least two other students at Mark G. Hoyle Elementary School. Swansea police began investigating after becoming aware of the report Monday night.

Police said Wednesday that 51-year-old Christopher Spangler and 43-year-old Heather Spangler, both of Swansea, were set to be arraigned in Fall River District Court on five counts of improper firearm storage near a minor, five counts of possession of a firearm without a Firearms Identification Card, five counts of possession of ammunition without an FID and two counts of reckless child endangerment.

“This situation had the potential to end in a tragedy,” Swansea Police Chief Mark Foley said in a statement. “Because of the work of our Swansea Police investigators, no one was hurt and several firearms that were possessed illegally and stored unsafely are now off the street.”

Officers and Swansea Public Schools investigated Tuesday, during which time safety precautions were taken at the school.

Police found probable cause and obtained a search warrant for the child’s home, which was searched Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said they discovered a Ruger .22-caliber handgun, a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Ruger .45-caliber handgun, a 12-gauge Savage Stevens shotgun and a Marlin .22-caliber rifle. Various types of ammunition were also found, and four of the weapons were loaded, police said, adding that they were unregistered and improperly stored.

All of the guns were seized from the home.

A K-9 unit was brought through the school Tuesday evening to search for guns and ammunition, but none were found, police said.

There is not believed to be any risk to the school, but police said there would be an increased presence there on Wednesday.

Police are continuing to investigate.

After dropping the opener on Monday, the Red Sox bounced back to take two out of three from the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park. They gutted out a tough 3-2 win on Tuesday and blanked the Brew Crew 5-0 in Wednesday’s finale.

As a result, Boston is now 4-8 on the season. While the record still doesn’t inspire much optimism, there’s reason to believe the club is starting to turn things around. There are also still a few lingering issues the team must resolve if it hopes to rise in the American League East standings.

Willson Contreras has earned a reputation as one of the game’s most fiery competitors over the last decade. Before joining the Red Sox, he spent his entire career in the National League Central with the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, so it’s no surprise there’s no love lost between him and the Brewers.

Contreras didn’t take kindly to Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff hitting him with a pitch in Monday’s series opener. It was the sixth time Woodruff had plunked Contreras in his career, and the Red Sox first baseman was visibly frustrated about it:

Contreras exchanged some words with Brewers manager Pat Murphy, but the situation didn’t escalate despite Contreras’ controversial slide into second base later in the game.

After the Red Sox loss, however, Contreras gave the Brewers a fair warning.

“They always say, ‘I’m not trying to hit you.’ That gets old. So next time they hit me again, I’m going to take one of them out. That’s a message,” Contreras said.

There weren’t any more fireworks for the rest of the series, but Contreras will be a guy the Red Sox lean on to give them an emotional spark when necessary.

Contreras has also started to heat up the plate. After notching his first Red Sox homer in Friday’s home opener win, the 33-year-old went 5-for-9 with a double, a homer, three RBI, and four walks in the Brewers series.

Roman Anthony’s arm remains a concern

Roman Anthony has had a handful of terrible throws from left field already this season. The latest came in a big late-game situation in the series opener vs. Milwaukee, and it was the worst one yet.

With the game tied at 5-5 with runners on first and second in the top of the eighth, Garrett Mitchell lined a single into left field. Anthony’s errant throw skipped through the infield, allowing both runners to score easily:

Anthony said he’s struggling to get a grip on the ball, while Cora attributed his issues to mechanics. Either way, the 21-year-old star’s arm will be in the spotlight whenever the ball is hit his way for the foreseeable future.

Sonny Gray stepping up as the No. 2

After the Red Sox acquired Sonny Gray from the Cardinals, we explained why he would be a solid No. 2 starter if called upon to assume that role. He indeed has taken on No. 2 starter duties amid fellow offseason addition Ranger Suarez’s struggles.

After a lights-out performance in the Red Sox’ home opener vs. San Diego, Gray doubled down with another impressive outing in Wednesday’s series finale vs. Milwaukee. The veteran righty let up just three hits and two walks across 6.1 scoreless innings.

Ideally, Gray will be able to operate as the de facto No. 3 in the rotation with Suarez stepping up as the No. 2. But with Suarez struggling, plus Brayan Bello going through some early-season woes, it’s encouraging to see Gray pitching the way he is.

Bullpen depth already being tested

The back end of the Red Sox’ bullpen has remained elite with Aroldis Chapman and Garrett Whitlock, but it’s been an up-and-down start to the season for the rest of the group.

It won’t get any easier as injuries become a factor. On Wednesday, right-hander Justin Slaten was placed on the 15-day injured list with an oblique strain. Boston called up left-hander Tyler Samaniego, who was acquired from Pittsburgh in the Johan Oviedo trade, in a corresponding move. He was sharp in his MLB debut with three strikeouts and a walk in his inning of work.

Speaking of Oviedo, he’s on the 15-day IL with what was announced Wednesday as a flexor strain. The good news is that there could be reinforcements coming with Patrick Sandoval making his first rehab start with Worcester and Kutter Crawford closing in on his first rehab outing.

Moving Trevor Story down in the order pays off

Trevor Story entered the Brewers series hitting .119 with a .333 OPS. After he went 1-for-4 in the series opener, manager Alex Cora moved him down from second to fifth in the batting order.

The adjustment worked. Story went 1-for-4 again in Game 2, but his two-run double was the difference in a 3-2 victory. In Game 3, he went 1-for-3 with two more RBI.

Last season, Story went through a nightmare May that led many to believe the Red Sox should cut ties. Boston didn’t give up on him, and he ended up being arguably the club’s best hitter for the rest of the season.

If Story is snapping out of his slump, that’s a huge relief for a Red Sox lineup that has lacked thump over its first 12 games. This is a completely different team when Story is hitting, and that was evident in this series.

The opinion said Customs and Border Protection officers have limited authority to cancel visas and can’t do so for suspected smuggling of biological samples. The cancellation of Kseniia Petrova’s visa was arbitrary and capricious, U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss said in her written ruling.

“The undisputed facts reveal that Ms. Petrova’s visa was impermissibly canceled because of the frog embryo samples and for no other reason,” Reiss wrote.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which includes Customs and Border Protection, didn’t immediately return an email message seeking comment.

In February last year, Petrova was returning from a vacation in France, where she had stopped at a lab specializing in splicing superfine sections of frog embryos and obtained a package of samples for research. She was questioned about the samples while passing through a customs checkpoint at Boston Logan International Airport.

After an interrogation, Petrova was told her visa was being canceled.

Petrova was briefly detained by immigration officials in Vermont, where she filed a petition seeking her release. She was later sent to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Louisiana.

She told The Associated Press in an interview last year that she did not realize the samples needed to be declared and was not trying to sneak anything into the country. Petrova has been back in her Harvard lab since January after successfully petitioning a court for the right to return to work, her attorney, Gregory Romanovsky, said.

Tuesday’s ruling was an important step toward “correcting what should never have happened in the first place,” Romanovsky said in a statement.

Petrova’s case is being closely watched by the scientific community, with some fearing it could impact recruiting and retaining foreign scientists at U.S. universities.

Wilmington police said they received a call from the woman on Saturday, March 28. She said she had left her scarf, valued at $600, at a Dunkin’ location in town earlier that morning. When she returned later on, staff members said they hadn’t seen it.

The woman told police the scarf has sentimental value because it was a birthday gift from her son that he bought with his own money from his first high school job. She said the scarf carried many special memories for her family.

After reviewing security footage, police determined that another customer had taken the scarf. The woman posted a message in a Wilmington community Facebook page seeking assistance, and on Tuesday, someone who had seen the post turned the scarf in to police.

Detective Daryl Ceruolo contacted the woman, who immediately responded to the station to pick it up. After getting her scarf back, she tearfully expressed her gratitude to police and the Wilmington community.

“I’m overjoyed to share that my beloved scarf has been found! Thanks to the incredible work of our local detectives and officers, its safely back with me,” she wrote in a post on her Facebook account. “I am so grateful for their kindness, professionalism, and dedication. A special thank you to the first officer who took my case and the detective who helped recover it. Your persistence and care went above and beyond — I can’t thank you enough!”

Anthony’s arm has been a topic of discussion since Boston’s second game of the season in Cincinnati on March 28. In the bottom of the 11th inning, Dane Myers sealed the Reds’ win with a single to left field that scored the runner from second. A good throw still may not have been enough to nail the runner at home plate, but Anthony’s attempt barely reached the infield:

Three days later in Houston, Anthony tried and failed to gun down Carlos Correa at home plate. While it was a better throw than the one in Cincinnati, it still left plenty to be desired. Correa was hardly past third base when Anthony gathered himself and fired toward home:

Anthony’s arm was put in the spotlight again in Saturday’s loss to the San Diego Padres. His inaccurate throw didn’t give the Red Sox a chance to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring in the ninth:

Lastly and certainly the worst of the bunch, Anthony allowed the Milwaukee Brewers to score two runs with a short and wildly inaccurate throw that skipped through the infield late in Monday’s loss:

After that alarmingly poor throw vs. Milwaukee, Anthony said he struggled to get a grip on the ball.

“I’m doing everything I can pregame and just struggling to get a grip,” he said. “At the end of the day, there’s no excuse. It’s terrible. It’s bad baseball, and it’s on me.”

Red Sox manager Alex Cora attributed Anthony’s issues to mechanics and footwork rather than injury (he suffered a season-ending oblique injury last year) or something on the mental side.

It’s an odd situation, but Sox fans can take solace in the fact that Anthony’s arm had never been a problem throughout his professional career. In fact, SoxProspects.com touted the 21-year-old’s defensive prowess and “above-average arm strength” during his days as a top Red Sox prospect.

So, what has changed?

We talked to prospect expert Ian Cundall of Baseball America, formerly of SoxProspects.com, to get his insight on Anthony’s arm troubles.

“If you look at his throws this year, velocity-wise, they’re kind of fine,” Cundall told NBC Sports Boston. “His max velocity on a throw this year is 91 miles per hour. It’s the same as Wilyer Abreu’s. So, it’s not a velocity thing, it’s just inaccuracy.

“I think that comes down to mechanics. You look at his footwork, he does not look that confident when he’s coming in and charging balls.”

Cundall’s view on the matter echoes Cora’s assessment: Anthony’s mechanics are off. That should be a fairly simple fix, but one has to wonder whether Anthony could also be dealing with a classic case of the “yips.” As a young star with pressure on him to lead the club in his first full MLB season, that wouldn’t be a surprise.

“I think it’s a combination of mechanics and a confidence issue,” Cundall added. “The arm strength is there, the accuracy is not. It’s not fluid. He does not look confident charging the ball …

“One of the hardest things to judge — and this applies to not just him, but all prospects — is that adjustment to the major leagues is massive talent-wise. You go from being the biggest fish in a normal-sized pond to all of a sudden you’re a small fish in a big pond again. That could be a little more of a difficult adjustment. … I don’t think it’s helped that the weight of the franchise is more or less on his shoulders.”

Last year, Cora stated his preference to make Anthony an everyday outfielder rather than a designated hitter. This season, however, Anthony has been a DH in five of his 12 games played, with Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida taking turns replacing him in left field.

Anthony will likely continue to be rotated in and out of the DH spot. As for a more consistent DH role, Cundall believes it’s far too early to jump to that conclusion.

“Having to shoehorn someone into DH who’s 21 years old is just not where you want to be, both roster-wise, and just for the type of player he is,” Cundall said. “It’s easy to forget that he was a very good defensive outfielder last year. … In the minors, there was never any concerns about his defense.

“He’s not Ceddanne Rafaela out there, but he was not expected to be a DH. … It’s too soon to overreact and say shoehorn him into a DH role.”

Overreaction or not, the Red Sox must operate with urgency as they enter Wednesday with MLB’s worst record (3-8). If Anthony makes headlines with another terrible throw, the calls for him to DH will grow even louder.

Cundall doesn’t see that being an issue long-term.

“It was not something that was ever an issue coming up through the system,” he said. “The rest of his defensive ability is still there, so it’s not like he’s missing fly balls or anything like that. You want him to be able to play the outfield, because that’s the way to maximize his value. … Long-term, you want him playing the field. He’s a good outfielder.”

All eyes will be on Anthony as he returns to left field for Wednesday’s rubber match against the Brewers at Fenway Park.

Tewksbury police said they responded to the hospital around 8 a.m. Tuesday for reports of an aggressive patient. When they got there, officers said they found the male patient had already been secured in a chair by hospital staff.

A preliminary investigation determined that the patient had been acting erratically and stood in a fighting stance when hospital staff approached him. The patient then hit a staff member in the face, and it took numerous staff members to restrain and administer medicine to him before police arrived.

Police said the patient is known to them, and they had previously responded to the hospital for a different incident where he had reportedly threatened staff.

The patient, whose name was not released by police, will be issued a summons to appear in Lowell District Court on a charge of assault and battery on a public employee, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.

The attack occurred about a week after nurses raised concerns about a new policy banning hospital security guards from carrying defensive tactical weapons, including pepper gel, batons and handcuffs. They said it was especially troubling because the hospital has seen a recent influx of patients with mental health issues who have been involved in or accused of criminal activity.

According to The Boston Globe, the change came following a September incident in which an officer pepper sprayed a patient who had injured a hospital worker following a standoff with security staff.

“There are people that are in fear,” said Ryan Wilkins, a nurse at the hospital, said last week.

The decision also drew criticism from Tewksbury Police Chief Ryan Columbus.

“I’m concerned that key decisions regarding hospital security are being made by individuals without relevant expertise in security or law enforcement,” he wrote in a statement. “Regardless of perspective, the hospital serves individuals who can present significant safety challenges. The focus should be on enhancing tools, training, and support for Public Safety personnel, not reducing them.”

The Buffalo-based bank currently employs 170 employees in 40,000 square feet on the 18th floor of the Winthrop Center tower in Boston’s Financial District. The bank plans to add 25,000 square feet on the 17th floor as it charts a growth path in Massachusetts.

Weymouth police say the first dog, a small, white Terrier-type, was found dead on Easter Sunday along the shoreline of Whitman’s Pond, near the gazebo on Middle Street. The dog had no identifying tags, collar, or microchip — only a Seresto flea and tick collar.

There were no known signs of trauma or suspicious circumstances, according to police, but the Weymouth animal control officer would like to locate the owner and give them closure.

The second dog, a medium-sized, black and white Pitbull mix, was found dead Monday along the shoreline in the Lakeshore Road neighborhood. The circumstances surrounding this dog’s death are considered suspicious, however, with police saying this dog was recovered wrapped in a plastic bag. There was no identifying collar, tags, or microchip, and officials are actively seeking information from the public regarding this situation.

Police are asking anyone who knows someone who had a dog matching either description to contact animal control officer Darren King at 781-660-3708, or dking@weymouth.ma.us. Anonymous tips are also welcome.

The B’s lost in overtime, but they scored five goals. Morgan Geekie, who hadn’t scored in 17 straight games, netted a hat trick to give him a team-leading (and career-high) 37 goals.

Despite the uptick in goals, this game provided even more evidence for why the Bruins needed to sign top prospect James Hagens and get him on the NHL roster as soon as possible.

They did that Wednesday afternoon, officially signing Hagens to a three-year entry-level contract. He could potentially debut Saturday against the Lightning at TD Garden.

Hagens, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, originally signed an ATO deal with the AHL’s Providence Bruins after his Boston College season ended a few weeks ago. The 19-year-old forward tallied a career-high 47 points (23 goals, 24 assists) in 37 games as a sophomore for the Eagles and won the Hockey East scoring title.

He played well for the P-Bruins, making six appearances and tallying four points (one goal, three assists). He showed the creativity with the puck, speed and offensive instincts that made him a highly-coveted prospect.

Hagens’ high-end playmaking ability should be a nice boost to the Bruins’ bottom-six (or wherever he plays) and power play for the rest of the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs. (Boston has a 99 percent chance of getting in).

The Bruins rank 18th in goals scored per game since the Olympic break. They were sixth before the break. Aside from Geekie’s goal drought, one of the biggest reasons for the Bruins’ scoring output falling in recent weeks has been a lack of production from the bottom six.

Alex Steeves has one goal in his last 21 games. Michael Eyssimont has zero goals in his last nine games. Sean Kuraly has a 21-game goal drought. Mark Kastelic has gone 22 games without scoring. Tanner Jeannot has zero goals in 24 consecutive games. Lukas Reichel scored in his first game with the Bruins on March 19, but he hasn’t found the back of the net in his eight games since.

Sensing a theme here?

Here’s a look at the scoring for notable bottom-six players since the Olympic break:

Hagens obviously isn’t a bottom-six talent. He has the potential to be a top-six forward (maybe a No. 1 center) for a long time. But putting him in a third-line role (left wing makes the most sense) at this early stage of his career to give this Bruins team a much-needed spark offensively is a risk worth taking. Hagens also has the versatility to play center or wing.

The power play is another area where Hagens’ offensive skill set could improve the Bruins’ attack. Whether it’s zone entries, creating scoring chances, etc., Hagens could bolster a power play that ranks 27th in success rate since the Olympic break. It was the league’s third-best unit before the Olympic break.

The Bruins went 0-for-2 with only one shot on net in four minutes of power-play time versus the Hurricanes on Tuesday. Some of the recent struggles stem from Geekie’s goal drought that ended Tuesday, but it’s larger than one player. It’s a team-wide issue.

Boston’s three most likely first-round playoff opponents are the Hurricanes, Lightning and Sabres. All three have good penalty kills. Buffalo and Tampa Bay both have top-seven PK units. The Bruins’ playoff run likely will be short if they don’t cash in on power-play chances.

The B’s just played four road games in six days. They aren’t practicing Wednesday, but they don’t play again until Saturday when the Tampa Bay Lightning come to TD Garden. By signing Hagens now, the Bruins can put him through a few practices before he makes his debut.

Hagens doesn’t need to be a savior. He doesn’t need to dominate. His speed and offensive skill could give the Bruins a much-needed boost come playoff time. And why wouldn’t you take a chance on that? The Eastern Conference is wide open.

A Rutland police report shows the department was contacted around 12:33 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, about a vehicle that had gone off Wachusett Street, into a shed. Officers arrived on scene and found Luke Persson, of Rutland, sitting in the driver’s seat of a damaged Jeep Grand Cherokee that was still running in the backyard of a residence, pressed up against a tree. There were several broken fences nearby.

Police say Persson had veered off Wachusett Street, run through a metal link fence, through a plastic horse pen fence, and then into the horse stable, before he backed out and hit another metal link fence, and then got stuck on a tree as he pulled forward to leave.

Persson refused EMS on scene and didn’t appear to have any injuries, police said.

Officers could smell alcohol in the SUV and noted there was vomit all over the center console and front passenger seat. Persson’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy, according to the police report, and he was slurring his words and unable to form complete sentences.

Persson told police that he was feeling “100%.” When officers asked him to get out of his vehicle, he began to fall, and needed help from police, however.

He continued to stumble, so police had him sit on the ground while they talked to him more, the police report shows. He told officers that he was on his way home from a friend’s house at the time.

The police reports also shows that when he was asked if he had been drinking, Persson replied, “Absolutely not officer.”

When he was asked if he could stand up and do standard field sobriety tests, Persson replied, “I decline any field sobriety tests.”

When he was asked if he would submit to a preliminary breath test, Persson replied: “Zero percent chance.”

Based on what police characterized as his bloodshot glassy eyes, slurred speech, smell of alcohol, and his inability to stand up or walk by himself, Persson was arrested for OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and wanton destruction of property $1,200+.

While on the way to the police station, police say Persson vomited in the back of the cruiser, as well as all over himself. He refused to provide a breath test sample at the police station, and his license was seized.

Persson kept leaning forward as if he’d fall over, and threw up on the booking room floor, police noted in their report. He also had to be held up for the booking photos, and couldn’t hold himself up for finger prints, so police had to stop the process for his safety. Persson was placed in a cell where he continued to throw up and peed on the floor, police added.

Persson’s bail was set at $500, and his mom brought cash to the station and bailed him out just after 3:30 a.m. He was due in court the following day.

The property owner was out of town in Arizona at the time of the incident and was forced to come home earlier. They told police that one horse was injured in the collision, sustaining a cut on one of its legs, and that overall damage significantly exceeded $1,200. The chestnut Arabian gelding was taken to the veterinarian and reportedly couldn’t get up in the paddock without assistance.

Authorities said the gas leak was reported around 8:50 a.m. after a forklift operating in the area of Nordstrom’s struck a gas line, prompting crews to evacuate the mall.

National Grid was contacted to shut off gas in the building, which they did around 10:40 a.m.

Fire crews walked through the entire mall with National Grid workers and their meters did not detect any dangerous gas levels in the building. The mall has since been cleared to reopen, though officials said a slight odor could still be detected in the building.

Police said the gas leak caused “significant traffic delays” in the area of the Middlesex Turnpike and Mall Road and people were asked to avoid the area while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

Aerial footage from the scene showed numerous police and fire vehicles on scene.

A spokesperson for National Grid said that a third party hit the gas service to the mall, causing a release of gas.

“National Grid responded and the area has been made safe. We will be making repairs to the damage. The Fire Department will determine whether the mall will re-open.”

The North Andover Patrol Officers and Sergeants’ unions announced Wednesday morning that they had passed a vote of no confidence in Gray and called for his immediate removal. The Eagle-Tribune was the first to report the news.

“We can no longer remain silent while operating under a toxic culture of vindictiveness and professional stagnation,” the union members said in a statement. “This vote is not about wages, benefits or other traditional labor issues – it is the unavoidable consequence of years of failed leadership, no leadership, and outright inaction. Sadly, the current turmoil faced by our officers was both foreseeable and avoidable.”

The unions referenced last year’s shooting of Fitzsimmons, a former North Andover police officer, as one example of “a pattern of leadership failures.” They specifically noted the absence of body-worn cameras, which were not used during the Fitzsimmons case — the judge in the case noted in announcing the verdict that testimony from both Fitzsimmons and the officer who shot her seemed credible to him, which made his role especially difficult.

“We have long been aware for the need to satisfy the current societal need for video evidence. For years, our union members advocated for industry-standard body-worn cameras to ensure both transparency and officer protection,” the union said in its statement. “These efforts were not theoretical, they were researched, presented, and were supported by the union as a necessary step toward transparency, officer protection, and evidentiary integrity. Those efforts were not acted upon, a failure that played a primary part in the recent case.”

“It appears that the body-worn cameras were one of those reasons,” said security analyst Todd McGhee, a former Massachusetts State Police trooper. “The only real differentiator would have been the bodycam, being able to review any type of bodycam footage.”

Fitzsimmons was shot in June of 2025 when three of her fellow officers served a restraining order filed by her ex-fiancé, Justin Aylaian, a North Andover firefighter. Fitzsimmons was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon for allegedly pointing a gun at the officer who shot her. But she said she pointed the gun only at herself.

She was found not guilty two weeks ago of an assault with a dangerous weapon charge brought against her for pointing the gun at the officer.

In an interview with NBC10 Boston last week, Fitzsimmons and her attorney said they will be pursuing legal action against the North Andover Police Department for their handling of the situation.

The day after that interview aired, Gray announced that his department was investigating after an “unauthorized user” posted a comment related to the Fitzsimmons case on behalf of the department, using the department’s official Facebook page.

He said a preliminary investigation determined that a former employee who is not authorized to use the department’s Facebook page was able to access that page and left a comment on another Facebook user’s page. He said the department has temporarily disabled its Facebook page during its investigation.

Fitzsimmons is not the first to sue the town. Two other women in the male-dominated North Andover Police Department have filed lawsuits or complaints with the state against Gray. Those documents allege female officers were treated as “less than” their male counterparts.

“Leadership is bound to be able to address those issues to make sure that every person within the department feels welcomed,” McGhee said. “There’s a loss of trust, there’s a loss of communication.”

Though he did not directly address the unions’ vote, Gray did release a statement Wednesday about the status of the department’s body-worn camera program.

“The North Andover Police Department is working actively with the Town of North Andover and Town Manager Melissa Rodrigues to implement a body worn camera program. Initiating such a program is a stated goal of the Select Board and one of my leadership goals as chief of a modern, state-accredited police department,” he said. “The startup and program maintenance costs have historically kept such a program out of reach, but in working with the Town, we will be prioritizing this program in the budget, and the Town of North Andover will actively seek grant funding to help offset the direct taxpayer expense. We plan to move forward with a proposal for a body-worn camera program as soon as possible. We are keenly aware that body cameras will showcase the high degree of skill and challenging work done each day by the men and women of the police department.”

There was a 911 call just before 7 a.m. for a crash involving a Volvo SUV and a Ford F-150 on Lisbon Street near Summer Street, according to police, who said it appears the Volvo was coming from Summer Street and taking a left onto Route 196 to head towards Topsham, at the same time that the pickup truck was heading west on Route 196 from Topsham into Lisbon.

A preliminary investigation shows the Volvo pulled out in front of the Ford when the collision occurred. The Volvo driver — a 53-year-old woman — was trapped inside her vehicle and needed freed by the Lisbon Fire Department, police said. She was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with serious injuries.

The pickup truck driver — a 30-year-old man — also suffered serious injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center. Neither driver’s name has been released at this time.

A picture shared by the police department shows the Volvo ended up in the middle of the roadway with heavy front-end and driver’s side damage, while the Ford was found just off the roadway.

Both vehicles were significantly damaged in the wreck, with police noting the Volvo was a total loss.

Maine State Police responded to the scene, using drone technology to support crash reconstruction, while the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office helped with traffic control and Lisbon Public Works assisted with road detours.

Lisbon police thanked the community for their patience and understanding regarding the traffic delays. They also thanked all the witnesses who stopped to help the people at the crash scene before emergency personnel arrived.

The crash remains under investigation.

In Massachusetts, Tyngsborough police said the schools received threats, and in New Hampshire, Nashua, Hudson and Litchfield all received threats. All of the threats were determined to be unfounded.

Tyngsborough police said they were made aware Wednesday morning that several schools in town received robocall threats to commit violence. In speaking with other law enforcement leaders, Police Chief Shaun Woods said he determined that similar robotic phone call threats had been made to many other schools across the Northeast.

While they said the threats are not believed to be credible, they will be increasing police presence in the schools for the day as a precaution.

Nashua police said they were also made aware of a reported school threat but noted it does not appear credible. Still, out of an abundance of caution, they said there will be an increased police presence in Nashua schools as well.

Nashua School Superintendent Mario Andrade said Bicentennial Elementary School and Main Dunstable Elementary School received a robocall around 9 p.m. Tuesday indicating a bomb threat. He said Nashua and state police conducted K-9 sweeps of the two schools on Wednesday morning and found nothing suspicious.

At 6:45 a.m., he said Nashua North, Nashua South, Dr. Crisp, Mt. Pleasant and Amherst Street schools received the exact same robocall, but based on their investigation, law enforcement has determined that the threat was not credible.

“All schools are operating on a normal schedule, and there will additional police presence at our schools,” Andrade said in a statement. “Please know that we take all threats seriously, as the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We are grateful for the swift response of our local and state law enforcement partners.”

Hudson, Litchfield and Pelham police said schools in their communities received similar threats, which they do not believe to be credible. All three communities said there would be an increased police presence at all local schools on Wednesday.

The New Hampshire Department of Safety said in a statement that it is aware of multiple calls reporting threats at schools throughout the state, and state agencies are assisting local law enforcement agencies with the investigation.

“These reports are believed to be a hoax. However, all threats will be taken seriously until such time as their validity is determined,” the agency said.

They said any suspicious activity should be reported to local authorities or 911. Information can also be reported anonymously by calling 603-223-3860 or online.

“It’s been almost two years of waiting for this day to be heard,” Melissa Hamel said outside the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on Wednesday. “It’s going to set precedent for open space throughout Massachusetts.”

Hamel is one of 20 residents along with the environmental group, The Emerald Necklace Conservancy, suing the City of Boston, and the owners of Boston Legacy FC — the city’s new professional women’s soccer club — over the renovation of the 76-year-old stadium.

The project cost is being split between the city and Boston Unity Soccer Partners, allowing Boston Legacy to share the facility with Boston Public Schools. Mayor Michelle Wu has said the city will be contributing $135 million to the publicly-funded portion of the renovation — up from an earlier $90 million figure.

Hamel is concerned about pollution, traffic and parking restrictions, as well as the public’s access to the park. Opponents who sued have also said the project would displace the marginal communities around it.

“But we believe there are alternative plans out there that could cost much less, be built to scale for the children in the community, which by the city’s own estimation is only about 1,200 seats that they need,” Hamel said.

A lower court judge previously found the city’s project didn’t violate state law because there isn’t strong evidence that the stadium property qualifies as public land. Wednesday’s hearing at the Supreme Judicial Court was an appeal of that ruling.

People in support of the redevelopment plan say it’s a much-needed upgrade after decades of decline, citing brand new facilities for Boston Public School student athletes.

“I really see this as the best of everything,” Fred Vetterlein said.

“Having sports medicine right there as well as having the facility, but most importantly the hours,” volunteer coach Tony DaRocha said. “I remember in high school I would sneak in to train, shouldn’t have to sneak in to a public facility.”

A spokesperson for the City of Boston said in a statement to NBC10 Boston: “Nearly 80 years ago, City and state leaders came together to build White Stadium as home for BPS athletics and reflected that partnership in our laws. The renovation is well underway and will deliver a state of the art stadium open to both BPS students and community members 365 days a year. We hope and expect that the Supreme Judicial Court will uphold the previous court decisions and that our community can look forward to this long-delayed investment in our students and the community.”

Construction is already underway, and Boston Legacy FC has already started their inaugural season, playing at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. The goal is to move into White Stadium for the 2027 season.

No decision was expected from the court Wednesday. It could be some time before the SJC issues a ruling.

Lawmakers have said the ban would be among the most restrictive in the nation.

It would prohibit social media use for children under 14 in Massachusetts and require social media platforms to obtain parental consent for children between the ages of 14 and 15. At the age of 16, minors would be able to use social media without parental consent.

The state Senate still needs to pass the measure before it can be sent for Gov. Maura Healey’s signature.

The proposal would also ban students from using cellphones in school. The Senate has approved a similar version of that measure.

If signed, the law would go into effect Oct. 1, impacting the next school year.

Parents who spoke to NBC10 Boston say they are behind the legislation.

“Children’s brains aren’t fully developed to understand all that they need to be able to process in order to effectively and safely use social media,” Lauren Dyer said.

“I grew up kind of an Internet native kid, but I feel like very quickly that it turns you onto some tricky patterns and so I see no reason why not to enforce a ban for kids,” Patrick Wawson said.

House Speaker Ron Mariano and House Ways and Means Chairman Aaron Michlewitz said in a joint statement that the legislation would take significant steps to protect Bay State children.

“The simple reality is that Massachusetts must do more to ensure that our laws keep pace with modern challenges – especially when it comes to protecting our children, and to setting students up for success in the classroom and beyond,” they wrote. 

Gov. Maura Healey had proposed a similar ban in her State of the Commonwealth speech earlier this year, but hers would have applied to all children under 18.

Social media ban for minors

• Under 14 Ban on Social Media Use: Requires a social media platform to prohibit a minor under the age of 14 from using any social media platform.  
• 14- and 15-Years Olds Parental Consent for Social Media Use: Requires a social media platform to allow a minor who is 14 or 15 years of age to use a social media platform only if the platforms receive verifiable consent from the parent. 
• At the age of 16 minors may use social media without parental consent.   
• Social media companies would be required to implement an age verification system to determine whether a current or prospective user on the social media platform meets the age requirement.  
• Parents of a minor user would be given access to data submitted by the user from the social media platforms 
• The Attorney General would be required to promulgate regulations to implement this not later than September 1, 2026.  
• This policy would go into effect October 1, 2026. 

Restrictions on cellphones in schools

• Requires school districts to have a policy to prohibit student use of personal electronic devices during the school day and during school-sponsored activities during the school day

Only NBC10 Boston was given access inside the CAF factory in Elmira, which is more than 350 miles from Boston.

The Spanish-based company is building brand new state-of-the-art Type 10 Green Line trains, which are bigger and more high tech than what’s currently on the rails right now.

“This is the kind of thing that excites all of us,” said Phil Eng, MBTA General Manager. “At the end of the day it’s what the public deserves.”

When we visited in early April, workers were busy moving cars across the assembly line. NBC10 Boston was the only station to see the first newly-finished train.

Eng said the agency listened to the feedback riders and operators gave after a prototype was parking at City Hall Plaza in 2024.

One of the first things you will notice inside the trains is more digital signage throughout the cars. The trains are also lower to the ground which makes them more accessible than current Green Line trains. The aisles are wider too.

“It is more spacious,” said Eng. “Fifty-percent more capacity. And I do think the all level boarding, flooring, is going to make it much easier for people to move about in the car.”

The cab now has its own door so the operator will now have their own space.

“That provides operator safety but it also allows the operator to be free of any distractions,” said Ryan Coholan, MBTA Chief Operating Officer.

The new trains all come installed with a safety system that’s built in to help prevent collisions and derailments.

On the day NBC10 was at the factory, workers took the first new train on a short test drive. They drove it back and forth testing everything including the new more modern boarding doors.

“It was the culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of folks,” said Eng.

The first four pilot trains will be delivered by the end of this year. T riders will start to see them in service by early 2027. There will be 102 new trains fully rolled out by 2031 — all of it costing $816 million.

“Once we’re at production pace, there will be two trains a month coming out of this facility delivering to Boston,” said Ed Holzlein, CAF Vice President of Operations.

The MBTA said production is on track.

“This is what the public deserves,” said Eng. “This is where the taxpayer’s dollars are going. At the end of the day it’s going to prove much more beneficial to them.”

It’s early next week that we have a chance to push into the summery warmth. A brief switch up in the pattern will allow warmer air to push into all of New England both Monday and Tuesday.

Right now, our best chance of hitting 80 degrees — for the first time since last October — will be on Tuesday. Make plans now, this a high confidence forecast!

Rebecca Fadanelli, a 40-year-old Stoughton woman, allegedly represented herself as a nurse at Skin Beaute Med Spa, her business with locations in Randolph and Easton. Authorities said she imported fake Botox and the fillers Sculptra and Juvederm from Brazil and China.

Fadanelli was arrested in November of 2024. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts said Tuesday that she had pleaded guilty to four counts of importing illegal merchandise, two counts of selling or dispensing a counterfeit drug and two counts of selling or dispensing a counterfeit device.

Prosecutors said Fadanelli received more than $1 million in client payments for the counterfeit drugs and devices.

While she led clients and employees to believe she was a nurse, prosecutors said, she is an aesthetician who has never been licensed to give injections or administer prescription drugs. She began importing the counterfeit drugs in or before March of 2021.

“For years, Ms. Fadanelli allegedly put unsuspecting patients at risk by representing herself to be a nurse and then administering thousands of illegal, counterfeit injections,” then-acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy said in a statement in 2024, adding that she “ignored safety regulations against bringing unapproved, counterfeit drugs and devices into our country and endangered the health of hundreds of her clients.”

Federal customs investigators had already been looking into whether Fadanelli, who also goes by Rebecca Daley and Rebecca Hawthorne, when a client filed a complaint to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration saying she had “bumps” in her lips and forehead tingling after receiving a filler treatment from Fadanelli in Randolph and never received a copy of the prescription for the substance that Fadanelli had injected despite asking for it, according to the court documents.

Over the next few years, investigators seized packages with apparently counterfeit injectable prescription drugs labeled Botox, Sculptra and Juvederm, and found her entering the country at Boston’s Logan International Airport with prescription drugs and vials of liquid, the documents said. A search turned up no record of Fadanelli buying the real prescription drugs through the companies that make them.

When agents searched the Skin Beaute Med Spa businesses in June of 2024, Fadanelli allegedly told them a certified nurse is the only person who administers the drugs, but a former employee told investigators that Fadanelli administered the drugs, saying she was a nurse.

The former employee also said that she’d been told the Botox cost $50 through a China-based ecommerce platform, according to the criminal complain, which noted that authentic Botox costs more than 10 times as much. The employee also claimed that when her packages started to be intercepted, Fadanelli began shipping them to different addresses, including to an acquaintance in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.

A confidential source had an April consultation with Fadanelli in which she quoted $450 for a Botox treatment, according to the complaint. That same source called and made an appointment for a treatment with Fadanelli last week.

The office of current U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Leah Foley said Fadanelli faces up to 20 years in prison for the charge of importing merchandise contrary to law, as well as three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. Each charge of selling or dispensing counterfeit drugs or devices provides for a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for July 1.

Police in Swansea, Massachusetts, seized five unregistered guns from the home of a young student who was reported to have brought one to an elementary school.

The child was alleged to have showed the gun to at least two other students at Mark G. Hoyle Elementary School. Swansea police began investigating after becoming aware of the report Monday night.

Officers and Swansea Public Schools investigated Tuesday, during which time safety precautions were taken at the school.

Police found probable cause and obtained a search warrant for the child’s home, which was searched Tuesday afternoon. Five unregistered firearms were discovered, stored unsecured, along with ammunition.

Authorities said no one in the home has a valid Firearms Identification Card.

The guns were taken, and Swansea police are planning to apply in Fall River District Court Wednesday for a criminal complaint against two unnamed residents on weapons-related charges.

A K-9 unit was brought through the school Tuesday evening to search for guns and ammunition, but none were found, police said.

There is not believed to be any risk to the school, but police said there will be an increased presence there on Wednesday.

City councilors, led by Miniard Culpepper and Brian Worrell, say they want clarity on the release of body-worn and dashboard camera video footage by the Boston Police Department.

“There is no set timeline for footage after a critical incident,” Culpepper said.

He and Worrell want the council to discuss a potential policy following the decision not to release any video from Boston Police Officer Nicholas O’Malley’s body-worn camera when, investigators say, he shot and killed a suspected carjacker. O’Malley faces criminal charges for his use of force.

“If the family wants to see the video of the bodycam, the footage, they should be allowed to see it,” said Culpepper. “At least the family.”

Culpepper, who also serves as a minister in his community, says that under prior police commissioners, videos from critical incidents were shared to help families, elected officials and other community leaders process what happened.

“You can then go to the community and assure the community what they are hearing or what they’ve seen is accurate,” Culpepper said.

Boston police legal advisor Dave Fredette testified and explained how the district attorney’s office has the final say on what is released in an ongoing death investigation.

“If there is a pending criminal case that is ongoing,” explained Fredette, “then the rules are going to dictate when and how that evidence is turned over.”

District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office told NBC10 Boston it generally does not release evidence in pending criminal cases because prosecutors don’t want to risk influencing the jury pool for or against either side

Councilor Ed Flynn supports a policy but urged consistency.

“I do think it has to be uniform policy,” said Flynn. “I just don’t necessarily like it when it is based on case by case. I think we need to be clear and consistent.”

Culpepper relayed in the hearing that he was deeply disappointed that none of the Boston Police Department command staff attended the hearing.

Boston city councilors push for more transparency around police bodycam video

Seventeen-year-old Tanner Manning was playing in a March scrimmage when he became tangled with an opposing player and went down screaming.

“We heard him scream, which was really frightening,” said Estelle Gromko, a Babson College sophomore who was in the stands that day watching her brothers.

His parents say they knew immediately the injury was serious.

“It was these two really loud screeches, and you knew that it was serious,” said his mother, Tanya Manning.

Tanner Manning’s forearm was broken in two places. Five days later, surgeons inserted two metal plates and 11 screws during surgery.

“When I looked at the X-rays and everything, I was like, ‘Yeah — I needed that,'” Manning said. “It was pretty bad.”

No trainer on site

What has angered parents most is not just the injury itself — but what they say was missing when it happened.

Ipswich High School’s only athletic trainer, who works part time, was not present at the scrimmage. Instead, Manning was helped by Gromko, who happened to be there and is trained as a lifeguard at Crane Beach.

“The extent of the break in his wrist was so close to puncturing something,” Gromko said.

Parents say confusion escalated further when an ambulance arrived — and couldn’t access the field. The gates were locked, and nobody had a key.

“The head coach was looking for anything — looking for a first aid kit, looking for the key to open up the gate,” said Tanner’s father, Tim Manning.

Fire crews ultimately got Manning off the field, but parents say the delays were unacceptable.

A rule gap in high school sports

School officials have pointed to MIAA rules, which do not require certified athletic trainers at all sporting events.

Under current MIAA guidelines, medical coverage is mandatory for higher risk sports like football, wrestling, rugby, and varsity ice hockey. Lacrosse, however — despite its speed and physical contact — requires medical coverage only during tournament play, not during scrimmages or regular season games.

That distinction is now under scrutiny.

“Some of those kids can throw that ball 100 miles an hour,” Tim Manning said. “How is this considered low-risk?”

Parents say the rule gap leaves schools deciding when medical coverage is necessary — and creates inconsistent safety standards from sport to sport.

‘What parent would be comfortable?’

While the Mannings say they are not focused on blaming the school, they say the system itself failed. Tim Manning says the question parents are left with is a simple one.

“What parent would be comfortable coming to a game where they don’t know there’s a trainer there?” he asked.

Tanner Manning is expected to be sidelined for about three months but hopes to return in time for the playoffs.

The MIAA did not respond to multiple requests for comment about its medical coverage rules or whether changes are being considered.

For now, parents in Ipswich say they will keep pushing for answers — and for rules they believe better reflect the realities, and risks, of modern high school sports.

The person was rushed to the hospital after advanced life support measures were begun, according to the Brockton Fire Department.

The incident took place on North Montello Street near Studley Avenue about 1:34 p.m., officials said.

The person was injured between the rear of a roll-off dump truck and the dumpster and was removed by co-workers, according to the fire department. First responders began CPR as well as advanced life support, then took him to Boston Medical Center South.

OSHA and Brockton police were investigating what happened, fire officials said.

Arlington, Winchester and Brookline are among the many that are asking or have asked voters to raise property taxes or risk losing city services.

“There’s a real push and pull between people wanting these services, but they don’t want to see their taxes go up,” said Greg Maynard with the Boston Policy Institute.

“Cities and towns are facing rising cost pressures, health care costs, utility costs, school-related costs and very limited options to raise revenues,” said Adam Chapdelaine with the Massachusetts Municipal Association.

The result for some towns is first responder and teacher layoffs, library closures and putting off repair work unless voters green light an override of Proposition 2½ which limits annual property tax increases to 2.5% of the previous year plus growth.

In 2026, a record number of communities are taking that step, including the town of Marshfield, which is facing a $7 million budget deficit. A rift has formed among select board members on whether to ask voters for an override or push back the budget process.

“We can be all set by town meeting to present all this,” said Marshfield Select Board Chair Eric Kelley during a March 25 meeting.

“I want people to feel like they had the information they needed to make an informed decision,” said Marshfield Select Board Vice Chair Stephen Darcy.

What’s behind the increase in local budget deficits is up for debate.

“A lot of this is tied up in the housing crisis,” said Maynard. “The reality is Boston and Massachusetts have not built enough housing and as a result, the property tax bases haven’t grown enough to keep up with demands.”

“The number 2.5 was set almost 50 years ago. It certainly doesn’t match up with the reality of an inflationary environment,” Chapdelaine said.

While the law, housing and expiring COVID funds play a role, all agree that voters ultimately need to make the final decision in an already difficult moment for affordability.

The state police Major Crime Squad is assisting Enfield investigators in conducting another search warrant inside the home, Enfield Police Chief Alaric Fox said.

On the morning of March 18, police were called to a home in Enfield for an unresponsive 12-year-old female. When they arrived, they found the girl’s mother, her 17-year-old brother, and her stepfather, who was identified as 39-year-old Anthony Federline.

In the weeks since the 12-year-old’s death, Federline has been charged with first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.

Federline was also a bus driver for Enfield Public Schools, according to Superintendent Steven Moccio. He was employed by Smyth Bus Company, the district’s contracted student transportation provider, Moccio said.

After his arrest, Federline was immediately terminated from his job as a bus driver, according to Moccio.

Republic Services has reopened its 54,000-square-foot recycling center in Peabody with new technology designed to process recyclables faster, more accurately and in greater volume. Company leaders say the goal is to improve both sustainability and the quality of the materials coming out of the facility.

“Our main goal is to improve our sustainability, and improve our materials coming out, and help the community around us improve their sustainability goals,” said Brian Skehan, general manager for Republic Services.

Inside the facility, a system of conveyor belts, magnets and AI-powered optical scanners works together to sort plastics, cardboard, metal and glass.

Joe Ganno, operations manager at the Peabody Recycling Center, said the scanners uses lasers and AI to identify items by their dimensions, weight, shape and color.

“It really is able to then sort the materials very well, to the point that our people who are doing the QC, or the quality control, there’s minimal sorting that they have to do,” Ganno said.

Still, workers remain an important part of the process.

“The opticals are great, and we love it, and it’s giving us a great commodity mix, but at the end of the day, we still need people out there looking for things that the AI might miss,” Ganno said.

The facility receives about 400 tons of material every day. The upgraded center can now process between 35 and 40 tons of recyclables per hour, compared to about 19 tons under the old system.

“That allows us to open up to more waste streams, to get more recycling in, and then it allows us to actually put more recycling out back into the system to be reused,” he said.

Once sorted, the materials are compressed into bales and sold across the country to be repurposed.

State officials say expanded recycling capacity will be important as Massachusetts works toward its goal of cutting waste disposal by 30% by 2030.

“We know that recycling and the capacity to recycle more are very important parts of that equation,” said Kathi Mirza with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

The Republic Services team also had an important safety reminder: Lithium batteries should never be thrown into household recycling bins because they can pose a serious fire risk for crews collecting and processing recyclables.

The No. 31 overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft is a great asset to use to bolster the talent around Maye. The question is whether it makes more sense to use that first-rounder to protect Maye or give him a dynamic weapon in the passing attack.

It might depend on which players are available at those positions when the Patriots get on the clock.

Anyone who watched Super Bowl 60 would probably lean offensive line. Maye was sacked six times and hit 11 times in that 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Maye was sacked a playoff record 20 times through four games. Nothing is more important than protecting your quarterback, and if a player such as Blake Miller of Clemson is still on the board at No. 31, that would be an avenue worth pursuing.

Miller could potentially be the Patriots’ right tackle for a long time. And he plays with the toughness you’d expect from a Mike Vrabel-coached team.

A strong case could be made for taking a wide receiver, too. The Patriots still lack a true No. 1 wideout. They lost Stefon Diggs in free agency but signed former Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs. If the Patriots don’t want to pay a steep price for A.J. Brown, maybe they look at a wideout at No. 31.

And unfortunately, experts say these kinds of attacks are becoming more frequent.

Brockton Hospital said it is working around the problem to provide patient care with a few exceptions. Hospital owner and operator Signature Healthcare says the hospital’s information systems were hit, requiring alternate methods of documentation.

“It’s the perfect storm. They have a lot of personal information about us and so that information becomes very, very valuable to scammers,” explained Steve Weisman, a professor at Bentley University.

Inpatient and walk-in emergency services are still operational, but ambulances are being diverted. Chemotherapy treatments have been canceled, and the pharmacies are open for consultations but unable to fill prescriptions.

Surgeries and procedures are taking place as scheduled.

“We are working closely with third-party cybersecurity experts, as well as state and federal officials, to determine the source of this incident,” said Kim Walsh, Signature Healthcare’s chief operating officer. “Our care teams continue to provide high-quality care using established downtime procedures. We remain committed to serving our community throughout this process.”

“Everyone’s a target for ransomware actors and attacks have gone up by thousands just a few years ago to today.” 

Cynthia Kaiser is with the Halcyon Ransomware Research Center and has investigated cyber crimes for the FBI.

“They know a hospital doesn’t want to endanger people’s lives. They know a hospital is worried about being able to give the right kind of care to patients and so they look at that and see easy money for them, which I think is just atrocious,” Kaiser said.

The hospital tells us they’re working to resolve the problem, but patients may experience delays. The investigation into the cyberattack remains ongoing and it’s not clear yet if any patient information was compromised. A timeline for a full restoration of the electronic systems is not available.

The cyberattack comes after the hospital was closed for a year and a half because of a fire.

The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office identified the man Tuesday as 29-year-old Jacob Graves, of Boston. They said the shooting remains under investigation.

The incident began around 10:44 a.m. Saturday when police responded to a 911 call from the 200 block of Hemenway Street near the Northeastern University campus. The caller told police there were four people with a gun who were looking to harm him.

When they arrived at the scene, officers located the 911 caller and started speaking with him through the door of an apartment. At some point, the officers requested EMS and their clinician, and they responded and began talking with the individual.

After an extended period of time — about 35-45 minutes — authorities said EMS concluded the person was in immediate need of attention due to some type of a mental health crisis. As they asked the individual to come out of the apartment, he immediately opened the door and struck both the clinician and an officer outside the door.

“He was armed with some type of sword,” Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said at a media availability on Saturday.

The officer was stabbed in the arm and the EMS clinician knocked to the ground. At this point, Cox said “one or more officers” fired both a Taser and their gun at the individual, bringing him to a halt. EMS provided medical attention to the individual at the scene and he was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

Cox said officers applied a tourniquet to the officer who was stabbed with the sword, and he was taken to an area hospital for a severe laceration. Multiple other officers and EMS clinicians were taken to area hospitals as well. None of the injuries were life threatening.

Some 40% of Massachusetts households, or 1.12 million people, experienced food insecurity at some point over the past 12 months, according to a report released Tuesday by the Greater Boston Food Bank and Mass General Brigham. That compares to 37% in 2024 and 19% in 2024.

About 700,000 households in 2025 experienced “very low food security,” which happens when a person must skip meals or not eat all day because they cannot afford food. The report is based on a survey of more than 3,000 adults from October to December.

Over the past six years, Hispanic households have dealt with the highest rates of food insecurity, with levels reaching 63% in 2025, according to the report.

“The data clearly shows that hunger in Massachusetts is on the rise,” said Dr. Lauren Fiechtner, a Mass General Brigham division chief and senior health and research advisor at the food bank. “Our results are sobering: more people are struggling, and while they report accessing food and nutrition assistance programs like food pantries, SNAP and WIC, they also say these programs are not enough.”

Some 75% of families receiving SNAP benefits said they still need additional support. Recipients could soon face bigger challenges as funding cuts and work requirements take effect under the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The report suggests bolstering state funding for SNAP, with an aim of decreasing a payment error rate that could cost Massachusetts around $350 million annually.

Just over half of residents were also relying on charitable food and nutrition assistance programs for at least half of their groceries, according to the report.

Households experiencing food insecurity on average said they needed an additional $500 monthly to meet their basic expenses. The report found 46% of food insecure households had trouble paying for heat and electricity, and only about one in two households had stable housing.

Nearly eight in 10 adults living in food insecure households had at least one chronic medical condition, such as obesity, diabetes, dental or gum disease, cardiovascular disease and mental health issues. Among those who had to forgo care, 67% reported skipping prescriptions and 40% skipped dental care.

In food insecure households with children, 21% of people reported times when their child couldn’t access medical or dental care due to costs.

Individuals in food insecure households were twice as likely to go to the emergency department or be hospitalized, the report found.

“The estimated excess costs of hospitalization associated with food insecurity were up to $13,257 per adult,” the report said. “In 2025, food insecurity was associated with up to $1.6 billion in emergency room visits and hospitalizations among adult MassHealth members.”

The report calls for boosting funding for the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program — which provides direct support to the Greater Boston Food Bank that’s then distributed to other food banks and pantries around the state — to $58 million. Gov. Maura Healey has proposed funding the account at $55 million in fiscal 2027.

Other recommendations entail ramping up “food is medicine” initiatives that are aimed at preventing and treating “diet-related illnesses,” strengthening food insecurity screenings and referrals for people to connect with support programs, and investing in local food systems.

“What was the nature of the controversy of Graham’s tattoo he received while in the Marines?” an emcee recently asked at a local community center.

The answer? “It was claimed to be a Neo-Nazi tattoo (totenkopf).”

This was not a new way of delivering opposition research, but an official campaign event for Platner’s supporters. And it showed how the 41-year-old oyster farmer and military veteran has capitalized on voters’ willingness to forgive past transgressions and embrace a populist message.

Platner is facing Gov. Janet Mills, 78, in the June 9 primary, with the winner taking on five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins, 73, in a race that could help determine Senate control.

“Graham Platner’s campaign gave me a place to put my energy in a positive way,” said Beth Knight, a 63-year-old teacher who attended the trivia night in Kittery, a small seaside town on the border with New Hampshire. “I believe he has a true redemption story.”

Participants drank soda and ate cookies while listening to Dropkick Murphys, a Boston punk band that Platner likes. Some seemed to know a lot about a candidate who was practically unknown just last year, from his dog’s name to the name of a bar where he once worked in the nation’s capital.

Among the questions was “what characteristics make Graham the best candidate to beat Susan Collins?”

One of the options was “he is handsome and has a deep voice,” but the correct answer in the game was “he has grown as an individual and is honest.”

Mills, now in her second term, is backed by the party leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer of New York, and other Democrats who say it is too risky to support an untested candidate such as Platner. Maine has one of the oldest voting populations in the country, and voters often elect politicians with a reputation for being moderate.

But Platner has excited some supporters with an antiestablishment message that his campaign believes could carry him to victory.

“What specific group did Graham identify as the primary enemy in his campaign launch video?” the emcee asked at trivia night. The answer was “the oligarchy and the billionaires.”

Increased visibility

Platner has centered his campaign on affordability issues such as housing and health care, but much of the news coverage has focused on his past behavior. He has been dogged by questions about the skull-and-crossbones tattoo reminiscent of a Nazi symbol that he said he got during a night of drinking while on military leave in Croatia.

Platner has maintained that he was unaware at the time that the image had been associated with Nazis, and he has since covered the tattoo with a different design. But there also have been lingering questions about inflammatory comments he made in old online postings, which he has since disavowed. More recently, he has been questioned for being a guest on a podcast hosted by Nate Cornacchia, a retired Green Beret who has been accused of antisemitism.

All the while, Platner keeps filling theaters, meeting halls and rallies. From his August campaign announcement to the end of March, Platner had hosted 50 town halls throughout Maine. His campaign accused Mills and Collins of holding none.

The events include traditional canvassing and phone-banking training, as well as happy hours at breweries and poster-making before No Kings protests. That wide footprint has increased Platner’s visibility. For example, on the same night that the campaign hosted the recent trivia game in Kittery, Platner was more than 350 miles away at a town hall in Fort Kent, in the state’s far north.

“He’s bringing an energy of wanting to create something in this race, win or lose. He wants to create a lasting connection in communities where people can get together and can actually talk to their neighbors face to face again,” said Megan Smith, a community organizer with the Maine People’s Alliance, an advocacy group that has endorsed Platner.

The Mills and Collins campaigns both rejected the idea that Platner is more accessible to voters, and both cited their candidate’s busy workload as an elected official.

“As the only Democrat to have won statewide in 20 years, voters trust Janet Mills, they know she is the only candidate who has delivered progress for Maine people, and they see her leading our state every single day,” Mills campaign spokesperson Tommy Garcia said.

Collins spokesperson Blake Kernen said that “town halls are often organized by partisan or dark money groups.”

“She prefers smaller group meetings, rather than holding town halls where very few people get to speak, and the level of civility is often not that high,” she said.

Spending and scrutiny ramp up

To date, Platner has significantly outspent Mills on advertising since jumping into the race in August, $4.8 million compared with Mills’ $1.5 million according to a recent analysis by AdImpact.

The spending comes as the campaign intensifies as the primary nears. Mills recently released a video in which women read some of Platner’s old social media posts that were dismissive of sexual assault.

Platner’s defenders do not appear worried about that increased attention, arguing that Democrats are more willing to elect candidates who are honest about past mistakes as long as they make an effort to show how they have changed.

“In this environment, you know, where we have people like Donald Trump in public office who have done terrible things, there is more appetite in the Democratic Party to have people that are not just purely polished and have been on an election track their whole lives,” said Sen. Martin Heinrich, a New Mexico Democrat who has endorsed Platner.

Questioning the establishment

Smith, the community organizer, said some voters bristle at the assumption that outsiders such as Schumer know better than Mainers.

“Mainers are kind of stubborn and we don’t like to be told what to do,” she said. “They’re not thrilled to have D.C. Democrats weighing in on our primaries.”

Still, Platner will have to overcome historical precedent to beat Mills.

“Historically, there’s been an inclination of Democratic primary voters in Maine to pick the known candidate,” said Michael Franz, a government professor with Bowdoin College. “Oftentimes, that is an older candidate who’s been in office for a while.”

Franz described Platner as “a high-risk, high-reward type of candidate.”

“He might end up being the new national figure that captures everyone’s attention if he’s elected to the Senate,” he said. “Or he might just be the candidate that everyone thought could come out of nowhere but ended up only getting 42% of the vote.”

A local group of restaurants known in part for their steak tips will be opening another new location.

According to an article from The Patriot Ledger, Conrad’s is planning to open in Canton, moving into the space on Washington Street within The Village Shoppes that had previously been home to Nosh & Grog. Once it opens, the new location will join others in Norwood, Walpole, Foxboro, and Needham, while another had been in Sudbury as well but it closed in 2022.

“When I lay down, I was hearing almost my heartbeat in my ear, just kind of a thud. I was like, this is so strange. Maybe I have a sinus infection or something like that. So I kind of brushed it off,” said Allyson Drummey.

Drummey, who works as a nurse, describes the constant feeling in her ear every night. Then, the headaches started.

“The final thing that kind of caught me off guard was if I was like coughing or was bending over some of my vision would be like fuzzy, almost like certain spots of my vision would seem like it was like gray almost, and then it would take a second to kind of come back. So that’s when I finally realized something was probably very wrong.”

She went to the emergency room and was later diagnosed with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a disorder where fluid inside the head is increased and causes a number of complications from severe headaches to vision loss.

”It’s often not until someone examines their eye and observes papillodema or optic nerve swelling that they’re able to be diagnosed,” explained Robert Mallery, a neuro-ophthalmologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Massachusetts.

Doctors at Mass General Brigham are starting a research initiative to understand IIH, improve diagnosis and find new treatment options.

Right now Mallery says they’ve noticed that about 90% of patients are overweight or obese, so they are studying the impact of weight loss medications like GLP1 as treatment.

“Between 85% and 97.5% of patients with IIH are women,” said Dr . Marc Bouffard.

“I think we already have some preliminary findings from some of the prongs of our research that have been really promising and that I think can help us to more accurately identify people who may or may not have this condition.”

As for Allyson, she said the medications worked and she feels great, with no more heartbeats in her ears or constant headaches. 

“It’s great to keep track of your symptoms because sometimes you don’t realize how long you’re going on for. It can be easy to brush things off and not take care of it right away. But I think definitely go to your doctor, raise concerns,” Drummey advised.

A new study released by Mass General Brigham noted that MRIs found changes in the fluid flow in the head that they believe may help doctors better diagnose IIH less invasively and more reliably.

A spokesperson for the airline said the incident occurred on Monday morning. Shortly after departing from Nantucket, flight #5001 experienced an issue in which the upper portion of the main cabin door opened while in flight. The plane continued to operate normally.

The flight crew returned to Nantucket and landed the plane safely without further incident.

“The aircraft has been taken out of service for further evaluation,” the airline said. “We are following all established safety procedures and will take any necessary actions based on our findings. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

NTSB says ‘many, many things' likely went wrong to cause crash at LaGuardia Airport

The Stow Fire Department said they responded to the firefighting academy campus around 9 a.m. for a report of an individual who had been injured in a fall.

Responding crews arrived and began providing medical assistance to the individual, who suffered what they described as “very serious injuries.” Two additional ambulance crews were called to the scene to assist.

The fire department said they tried to call in a medical helicopter to fly the person to the hospital, but helicopters were not flying due to the weather conditions. A flight transport crew arrived on scene and brought the person to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for treatment.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said in a statement that the person injured was “a member of our Crib Support team.” More detail on what led to the fall wasn’t available, but the statement asked “that you please spare a thought and a prayer for him and his loved ones.”

The Chelmsford Fire Department later said that the person who was hurt is a firefighter in their department who also works part time at the academy. He was at UMass Memorial Medical Center being treated for his serious injuries, with other members of the department there to support him and his family.

The department didn’t publicly identify him, but said, “All of us at Chelmsford FD are holding him in our prayers.”

A few spots even saw some light accumulation. 

As we continue moving through Tuesday, a few more snow showers could mix with rain here and there in central and eastern Mass, but we don’t expect many problems as our high temperatures climb well above freezing, into the mid to upper 40s. And we’ll see mostly cloudy skies and a few peeks of sunshine. 

Tuesday night, we’ll see gradual clearing. A stray shower is possible early. But as the skies clear, our temperatures will take a tumble!  Low temperatures will drop into the mid to upper 20s into Wednesday morning.  Bundle up!

Wednesday will be the coldest day of the work week. After a morning start in the 20s, highs will likely reach the low to mid 40s. We’ll see plenty of sunshine.

The sun will continue Thursday and Friday. And our temperatures will be warming up, too. In fact, highs will be in the mid 50s on Thursday and into the mid 60s on Friday.

A cold front could bring a few light rain showers to Greater Boston by Saturday morning. Otherwise, we’ll see partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid 60s. 

By Sunday, highs will dip close to 60 degrees. But the temperatures will rebound into the low 70s Monday and Tuesday of next week!

Police said the investigation began on April 2, after a student at the Nottingham West Elementary School in Hudson, New Hampshire, was injured on her upper arm while at school. As part of the investigation, police reviewed surveillance footage and spoke with school and district staff.

Police allege that Jenna Kulick, who worked as the student’s one-on-one paraprofessional, made “unprivileged physical contact” with the child.

Kulick, 20, was arrested and charged with simple assault. She was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled for arraignment on May 12 at the 9th Circuit Court in Nashua.

Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is urged to contact the Hudson Police Department.

An alert sent to students and staff on Tuesday morning warned of reports of a person with a possible firearm in the woods along Commonwealth Avenue.

“Lockdown at the Warwick campus. Based on location, decide to run, hide, or fight. Seek shelter, turn off lights and silence your cell phone. Wait for all-clear,” CCRI posted on social media.

Warwick police told WJAR-TV that the report was for a person with an object sticking out of their backpack. The object looked like the butt of a gun, according to the report.

The report came from an area off campus and despite a law enforcement search, no such person was found. At this time, police say the report is unfounded.

CCRI lifted the lockdown around 1:30 p.m. Students and employees were asked to leave the building from the second-floor entrance ramp, where police will assist with dismissal.

A chain of dessert shops with roots down south will be expanding to New England, opening a location in the heart of Boston.

Clancy, 35, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges brought by the Plymouth District Attorney’s Office over the 2023 deaths of her children: 5-year-old Cora Clancy, 3-year-old Dawson Clancy, and 8-month-old Callan Clancy.

Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, had argued for what is known as a “bifurcated trial,” meaning the first part would be to determine whether Clancy is found guilty and the second part would be to determine whether she is criminally responsible.

Plymouth Superior Court Judge William F. Sullivan denied Clancy’s motion, but in a new motion dated April 2, the defense requested a reconsideration.

“…the issue of the actions that resulted in the death of the decedents in the indictments at the bar is not a live issue and the defendant is willing to stipulate formally in writing to her involvement,” the filing reads. “The defendant submits that the only live issue for consideration at trial would be the defendant’s state of mind as it relates to the defense of lack of criminal responsibility.”

Reddington previously filed a notice in December that they plan to pursue an insanity defense, and Clancy filed a malpractice lawsuit in Norfolk Superior Court in February against several of her medical providers, alleging they failed to diagnose her bipolar disorder and subjected her to a “disorganized, uncoordinated course of polypharmacy” that resulted in a psychotic break.

If Clancy were found mentally incompetent, she would not go to prison, but she could be committed to a mental health facility.

Prosecutors argued that the defendant has no constitutional right to a bifurcated trial and that the two trials would be “nearly identical.” They also said requests for bifurcated trials are usually denied and there is no real reason to support the request.

Prosecutors allege Clancy killed her three children on Jan. 24, 2023, by strangling them with exercise bands after sending her husband to get takeout food from a far away restaurant. Following the attacks, officials allege Clancy cut her wrists and neck before jumping from a second-story window in an attempt to end her own life.

The incident left her paralyzed from the sternum down, according to her attorney. She has been undergoing mental health treatment at Tewksbury State Hospital, where she is under constant supervision.

Clancy is scheduled to undergo a forensic psychological evaluation from April 10-12, and the parties are scheduled to return to court on April 23 for a status hearing. Her trial is scheduled to begin on July 20, after it was postponed multiple times.

Trial of Lindsay Clancy, mom accused of killing her kids, delayed until next summer

Boston fans unfamiliar with Contreras’ fierce and apparently longstanding rivalry with Milwaukee got quite the indoctrination Monday night during a wild series of events at Fenway Park in the Red Sox’ series opener against the Brewers.

Let’s break it all down, from what started Monday’s bad blood to Contreras’ beef with the Brewers that goes back nearly a decade:

The incident

It all started in the third inning, when Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff grazed Contreras on the hand with an inside fastball. Contreras, who has been hit 24 times by Milwaukee pitchers in his career (more on that later), took offense, barking at Woodruff as he made his way to first base.

Contreras then slid hard into second base while trying to break up a double play, tearing the pant leg of shortstop David Hamilton with his cleat. Brewers manager Pat Murphy emerged from the dugout to take exception and engaged in a shouting match with Contreras, who was on the top step of Boston’s dugout.

The fallout

Contreras didn’t exactly diffuse the situation after the game. When asked about that sequence, he responded with a direct threat to the Brewers.

“They always say, ‘I’m not trying to hit you.’ That gets old,” Contreras told reporters after Boston’s 8-6 loss. “So, next time they hit me again, I’m going to take one of them out. That’s a message.”

Contreras repeated his message multiple times throughout the interview.

“I took exception with it, the 24th time (I’ve been hit by a Milwaukee pitch). It’s not coincidence,” he added. “They’re going there with a purpose. That’s fine, that’s pitching. But next time you hit me, the message is clear. I’m going to take one of them out.”

The Brewers, meanwhile, responded to Contreras’ bluster with the verbal equivalent of an eye roll.

“I mean, we’ve seen that skit for the last 10 years,” Brewers star Christian Yelich told reporters, via MLB.com. “It’s nothing new.”

“We’ve been through this — it’s, what, nine years for me? — it seems like every year,” Woodruff added. “He’s trying to play a game and he’s trying to get his side fired up. Once I knew what was going on, I wasn’t going to let it affect me on the mound. I knew I had a job to do.”

The backstory

So, what exactly is going on here? Why does Contreras despise the Brewers, and why do they keep hitting him?

For context, Contreras gets plunked a ton: He’s now been hit by 131 pitches in his career, which is the second-most among all active MLB players behind only Starling Marte (166). But the Brewers have accounted for 24 of those hit-by-pitches, which is 10 more than any other team. And Woodruff in particular has beaned Contreras six times in his career.

That’s partly due to opportunity: Contreras has played the Brewers more than any other MLB opponent (121 times) thanks to his 10 seasons in the National League Central — seven with the Chicago Cubs and three with the St. Louis Cardinals.

But there have been other incidents that have fanned the flames of this rivalry.

In a 2021 game between the Brewers and the Cubs, Chicago pitcher Ryan Tepera appeared to retaliate for Woodruff hitting Contreras by throwing inside on Woodruff when he stood in as a hitter. Later in the game, Contreras hit a go-ahead homer and shushed the Milwaukee crowd, later boasting that the Brewers “picked the wrong guy to the throw at.”

Incidentally enough, Contreras also had a dust-up involving then Brewers third-baseman Caleb Durbin — who’s now his teammate in Boston — with the Cardinals last season. Durbin collided with Contreras at first base while trying to run out a grounder, and Brewers felt as though Contreras intentionally stood in Durbin’s running path.

The result? Milwaukee plunked Contreras in his next at-bat.

The final fascinating subplot here? Contreras, brother, William Contreras, is the starting catcher for the Brewers. William attempted to cool his brother down Monday night after his hit-by-pitch, but to no avail.

“I tried, but it’s impossible,” William told reporters. “That’s how he plays.”

So, yeah. There’s a lot going on here.

Game 2 of Red Sox-Brewers is set for 6:45 p.m. ET on Tuesday, with aces Garrett Crochet and Jacob Misiorowski squaring off. And if Contreras gets hit again, there could be fireworks.
