Three New Seasons of Box Scores and Two New Seasons of PBP Added to Baseball Reference

Posted by Mike Lynch on March 26, 2026

Thanks to our friends at Retrosheet, Baseball Reference is thrilled to announce that we have added three new seasons of box score coverage (1898-1900) and two new seasons of play-by-play (1910 and 1911). This means that we now have box scores predating the existence of the American League, covering the entire Modern Era (and then some!). Please see our updated coverage map here. Updates to Historical WAR Figures

Posted by Mike Lynch on March 26, 2026

Thanks to our friends at Retrosheet, Baseball Reference has added three new seasons of National League box scores (1898, 1899 and 1900) and two new seasons of play-by-play coverage (1910 and 1911). Please see our updated coverage map here. Additionally, we have updated our 2024 park factors to use a three-year rolling average with 2025 included. Together, these changes also allow us to make thousands of (mostly) slight updates to player WAR. Read the rest of this entry

Several Dozen Newly Discovered Unofficial Totals Added to Basketball Reference

Posted by Mike Lynch on March 24, 2026

Anyone reading this blog post is likely aware that the NBA box score has evolved over the years. The 1946-47 BAA (which the NBA considers its first season), for instance, tracked only points, field goals, field goal attempts, free throws, free throw attempts and personal fouls. This means that important features of a modern box score from minutes played and rebounds to turnovers and steals were not tracked. The early 1950s saw minutes played and rebounds added, but then it wasn't until 1973-74 that many fixtures of the modern box score reached 'officialdom.' 1973-74 is the first season for which blocked shots, steals, offensive/defensive rebounds and team turnovers are considered official. Player turnovers would not reach the same status until 1977-78. However, "official" merely means "of the office" and does not mean that these numbers were not being reliably tracked earlier (or that the 'official' statistics are any better/more accurate). In-Page Navigation Redesign on College Basketball

Posted by Adam Darowski on March 10, 2026

On our College Basketball site, we’ve redesigned our in-page navigation system (we call it the “inner navigation”) that you use to access supplemental content (such as Game Logs and Splits) as well as the “On This Page” section (which serves as the page’s table of contents). While the content is all the same, we have changed the presentation on desktop from a horizontal bar to a vertical sidebar. The interaction is click/tap based instead of hover-based. The inner navigation is also now the same on desktop and mobile. This is an incremental design update and not part of an extensive design overhaul.

This is the most extensive change we’ve made to the design of our sites in quite some time, so I’d like to walk you through the process. First, here’s what it looks like:

Edits to Historical NFL Player Games Played Totals

Posted by Mike Lynch on March 5, 2026

At Pro Football Reference, we recently completed a project adding full starters and participation data for every game in the history of the NFL (including the APFA), AFL and AAFC. This project gave us an opportunity to re-evaluate some games played and games started totals for players from 1920 to 1969 that have persisted in record books for many years. In doing so we decided to make some changes, in consultation with Pete Palmer, which we'd like to lay out here.

Can You Help Us Find 130 Missing Dates for Women’s College Basketball Games?

Posted by Mike Lynch on March 4, 2026

Late last year, we added scores for every game in the history of Division I Women's NCAA Basketball. At the time, we were missing dates for over 6,000 of the games (a small percentage considering how many games have been played). We have kept at it trying to find as many of these dates as possible and have whittled it down to 130 games with no associated date. Unfortunately, we have likely exhausted most of our available resources at this point. Which is where you come in. We'd like to share the 130 missing games and see if anyone is able to help us find any of the dates.

Pro Football Reference has completed its roll out of game-level participation and starters for all of NFL/AFL/AAFC/APFA history and now has this data all the way back to 1920, when the NFL played its first season under the APFA name. As an example, you can now visit the career gamelogs for Curly Lambeau (or anyone else in NFL history) and see a full list of the games he played in (and started in). Read the rest of this entry

Heart and Hustle Award Winners Added to Baseball Reference

Posted by Mike Lynch on February 26, 2026

Baseball Reference has added coverage of the Heart and Hustle Award to the site. Created by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association in 2005, the Heart and Hustle Award is voted on by Alumni and active Major League players. It is presented annually to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit and traditions of the game. Bobby Witt Jr. has won each of the last two awards, making him the second player to win the award consecutively. Craig Biggio also did so in 2006 and 2007.

World Baseball Classic Stats Have Arrived on Baseball Reference

Posted by Jonah Gardner on February 20, 2026

Exciting news! We've added stats from the World Baseball Classic to Baseball Reference!

Our WBC section covers the entire history of the competition, dating back to the first WBC in 2006! Additionally, we'll be updating it with this year's stats once the 2026 WBC begins in March.

In addition to the dedicated WBC section, WBC stats will show up on players' Register pages! These are the pages that have their more complete baseball histories, including stats from the minor leagues, foreign leagues, winter leagues, and NCAA. You can get to these pages even easier than before using our updated in-page navigation bar.

Thanks and enjoy the 2026 WBC!
