Biography
Return Jonathan Meigs Jr. was a Democratic-Republican politician from Ohio. He served as the fourth governor of Ohio, fifth United States Postmaster General, and as a United States senator.

Career
- Meigs settled in the Northwest Territory. In 1788 he the first Clerk of the newly established court at Marietta. He was appointed as Postmaster when the first Post Office opened in Marietta in 1794. In 1798 he was appointed to a judgeship on the Territorial Court and elected to the Territorial Assembly the following year.
- At statehood he was the first Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. He left Ohio briefly to serve as a judge in the Louisiana and Michigan Territories. In 1807 he returned to run for governor. Though he won the the election he was declared ineligible due to residency requirements. He was appointed to the US Senate to fill out the term of Sen. John Smith and won his own term a year later. He resigned in 1810 after being elected governor. In 1811 he was elected to a 2nd term but resigned in 1814 to accept an appointment by President Madison as Postmaster General, a job he kept until 1823 when he resigned due to ill health.
