Janix was a planet that existed in the galaxy away from the Core Worlds with its main feature being a[8] neon-lit and shadow-soaked[10] city with towering skyscrapers built into a crater.[8] It was self-governed under a functioning democracy with a fragile balance between its Tactical Defense Force and the gangsters and crime syndicates, who kept peaceful under a tacit accord for their own business interests.[7] Following the formation of the Galactic Empire, the former Sith Lord Maul and leader of the Shadow Collective attempted to rebuild his criminal syndicate on Janix at the same time[8] as the Empire and the Inquisitorius also arrived, leading to conflict between the two groups,[3] the local criminal underworld and the local police force.[8] Maul also met the former Jedi Padawan Devon Izara on the planet.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- "It's one part Gotham, one part Metropolis and a hundred percent Star Wars with all these different levels and layers. It's a city essentially built into a crater on this planet that is untouched by the Empire. It's got a functioning democracy and law enforcement doing a good job of policing their own community. It's a rich environment for crime and gangsters, but so far there's been a very peaceful accord between all of them in the interest of business."
- ―Matt Michnovetz on Janix
Janix serves as the main setting of the 2026 animated series Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord. Prior to it's premiere on April 6,[8] the planet appeared in the prequel comic miniseries Star Wars: Shadow of Maul written by Benjamin Percy, beginning on March 4.[10] Maul - Shadow Lord's head writer Matt Michnovetz described Janix as being inspired by Gotham City and Metropolis[8] from the Batman and Superman comics by DC,[11] and Percy described it as noir.[10]
