EA Officially Ends Take-Two Bid; Shares Plunge

In the midst of economic turmoil today around the world after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch's acquisition by Bank of America, and AIG hanging on a thread, Take-Two shares are plunging as well. This comes after Electronic Arts announced on Sunday that it has officially ended its bid to acquire the company for $2 billion, or $25.74 per share. At the time of writing, Take-Two shares dropped 27% in morning trading and is just below $16 per share, basically where it was before EA started its proposal.

Take-Two sent out a press release early this morning in response, saying they're committed to focusing on creating value for its stockholders and consumers. While Electronic Arts continually said that they wouldn't want to interfere with the development process of GTA IV, experts say there could potentially have come conflict between Rockstar Games and EA, which may easily not be a part of Take-Two at all come next year. Rockstar Games' contract with Take-Two expires in February 2009, and unless they renew their contract with the parent company, the boys can pack their bags and take it elsewhere or go independent.

For fans of the series though, there's just one problem – the GTA franchise is owned by Take-Two, and is definitely not something they would want to sell off. Analyst Michael Pachter, who has made several far-fetched predictions before about Take-Two and the gaming industry, predicts a potential bidding war for Rockstar Games.

Personally from what I've heard and read about Sam, I don't think he's that greedy – and he won't let money interfere with something like this. It's worth noting though that if they would to do that, now is the perfect time, as they have just completed major titles, and all of them would have released by February next year. We'll keep a close eye, but it's probably over hyped as usual.

Eurogamer: GTA IV DLC Releasing November '08

Eurogamer today claim that sources close to Rockstar North have told them that the first episodic content pack for the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV will be available during the month of November. We of course can't confirm this ourselves, but it's worth noting that the official release date is during the fourth financial quarter of parent company Take-Two Interactive, which stretches from this November to January next year.

This is not the first time Eurogamer has posted such news. In late 2006 they posted a similar article citing again unnamed Rockstar North sources. Then they reported that downloadable content will be releasing for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Let's say their sources are legit and trustworthy, and the ones in 2006 were the same as the ones now in 2008, this following quote from that very 2006 article we should find interesting:
"Think of the world as a large island - the new downloadable areas will be like smaller islands linking into it," the source explained. (Which is a structural analogy, rather than a suggestion that the game is set on an island, we hasten to add.)

– Eurogamer, October 17, 2006

Eurogamer is a popular gaming website who were one of the few to get an interview with Rockstar North Art Director Aaron Garbut. How things eventually will play out can either increase their credibility or leave them frowned upon. We'll keep you updated.

Grand Theft Auto Knowledge Helps Preteen Save Family

It's no secret that the Grand Theft Auto series has come under intense pressure from the media, lawyers trying to get a leg up on their career, and even Washington. Most of it revolves around its exposure to children.

Earlier this year, in a poor effort to rid the city of Chicago from its crime and gun violence, the city's Transit Authority pulled advertisements of GTA IV across the city, it's second time after GTA: San Andreas. Offering a real change, a story has come out of the same state about an 11 year old girl who had saved her family after a car crash.

Karen Norris from Streator, Illinois and her family was involved in a car crash where the vehicle had flipped over into a ditch. The girl said that from playing GTA, she knew that the car could potentially blow up when in that position, and proceeded to pulling her parents and siblings out of the car via the back window. All family members survived with minor injuries after making their way to the road to seek help. Visit The Times for the full story, including a picture of the family and the wrecked car.

Car Cannon Fun!

Well, the IGN GTA Community continues to grow and develop, and find new ways to enjoy the fantastic product put out by Rockstar games. In the latest editorial, take a look at one of their creative projects - making the most of the swingset cannon glitch to try to destroy cars as much as possible!

There are some really interesting things happening at the IGN GTA Board right now. User nasty_wrx05 had posted a thread a while back that contained some very nice pictures of Niko Bellic, Liberty City and its inhabitants. A handful of the shots showcased the result of using the popular swingset car cannon (scroll down a bit to get to the car cannon entry), a glitch that involves driving a car into a swingset, and having the set launch the car very rapidly into the air...

Grand Theft Auto IV World-Wide Sales Reach 6,3 million

A new report was released today by the top providers of video game sales in the U.S., UK and Japan – listing the amount of units sold for the top five games from January through July. As expected, GTA IV is in the lead, having sold nearly 6,3 million units. In second place is Super Smash Bros: Brawl, selling just over 5,4 million units. While there's obviously no data for GTA IV in Japan (releases there October 31), interestingly Super Smash Bros has sold more in Japan than GTA IV did in the UK. Listed below is the data, as from NPD:

First GTA IV PC Details & Screenshots!

Rockstar Games today for the first time showed off the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV at the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany, and Euro Gamer have just posted details from the press event. Some exciting new details, which you can read all about below. Rockstar Games also released the first screenshots for the PC version, all ten of which you can view here. Below we've written a list of new things to expect in the PC version:

  • Graphics will be "polished well beyond what they were on the 360 and PS3".
  • New for PC version is a replay editor, buffering up to 30 seconds of game play in your history. Stop the game at any time to view footage.
  • Clips can be saved and edited, using a variety of tools such as video filters and switching camera angles.
  • Clips can be put together into a sequence and saved. Share your videos via R* Social Club.
  • New filters in multiplayer games offering a greater variety of customization of games.
  • Players will be able to use their Xbox 360 controller or traditional keyboard to play the game.
  • Visuals look "more polished," says Eurogamer, continues by saying: "lighting is more realistic and there's a much higher level of detail on both characters and environments". Movement animations are also said to be smoother.
  • IGN's own man at the event says 2560 x 1600 is the highest resolution in which you can play the game.

Look, great draw distance, and no blur filter!

Rockstar's Steve Hahnel commented that the console versions only allow for up to 16 players in online games, and said that they're "expanding on that". We assume that this means more players, and even the ability to set maximum amount. The demo that they previewed to the press at the show was a play through of the mission Three Leaf Clover.

Expect a more crisp, detailed, and smoother game with the PC version.

Stay tuned!

New Poll: Midnight Club Los Angeles

Hitting store shelves in early October for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is the next videogame from Rockstar Games powered by their own proprietary engine RAGE. This is of course Midnight Club Los Angeles by R* San Diego.

While I remember enjoying Midtown Madness and its sequel at the turn of the century (developed by same studio), I did not play any of the Midnight Club games in the series. Still, I've been impressed by the visual quality of Midnight Club: LA and excited about what the multiplayer experience will offer – racing around in Los Angeles with a great selection of vehicles that you can customize.

Do you enjoy online racing in GTA IV that you feel you should get this game, or are you gonna sit this one out? Vote in this week's poll, and direct your comments over here.

Sam Houser Interviewed by Develop Magazine

Develop Magazine recently interviewed Rockstar Games Co-Founder and Director of Grand Theft Auto IV Sam Houser. In addition to the interview that was published online, the oldest of the two Housers also wrote a small biography with highlights and successes of both his live and that of Rockstar Games. Apart from referencing the Daily Mail a few times, some interesting questions were answered, some of which are quoted below. But as Sam said before, they don't make the company about them – but rather their products. Still, it's worth a read.

Sam on July 2005: "Residue code found in San Andreas. Hackers modify it and it turns into scandal known as ‘Hot Coffee’. Get dragged into legal nightmare, ending in trip to Washington in February 2006 to sit in front of federal trade commission staff – for nine hours."

Rockstar committed to episodic content for GTA before GTA IV was finished; how did that impact the way you write and plan for the first GTA IV game?
"You’ll see in a few months."

"All aspects of games can be pushed a lot further. We are only scratching the surface of what is possible in this medium. Of all things, storytelling is one of the areas that in some ways has the furthest to go. Using choices like that is something more or less unique to games, but the art is in combining a strong, cinematic narrative with choices, so players get the best of both models – the best story that feels like it is evolving around them as they play based on their decisions.

[...]

In order to be successful, we are going to have to continue to do what we have always done – make games that we would want to play, and hope there is audience for them. We don’t believe in focus testing ideas (it’s like asking an audience what album they want to hear – they don’t know until they hear it!) or thinking of a target market or anything like that; it’s an anathema to creativity. We are trying to make commercially viable art, not sell washing powder. While people like what we do, we will continue to do it to the best of our abilities. When they don’t, we will have to stop and do something else."
