What's New in Remote Desktop Services in the Windows Server Technical Preview
Updated: October 1, 2014
Applies To: Windows 10 Technical Preview, Windows Server Technical Preview
During the Windows Server Technical Preview, we have added the following support to Remote Desktop Services.
In previous releases of Remote Desktop Services, we optimized the RemoteFX graphics implementation around end user experience (does Office open and work smoothly? Can you browse the web?). Now, with the release of Windows Server Technical Preview, we’re pleased to provide optimized RemoteFX capabilities that improve the experience in a Windows VDI environment and support OpenGL and higher memory. Specifically, during Preview, you’ll see the following:
-
Support for OpenGL 4.4 and OpenCL 1.1 API
-
Configurable, larger dedicated video memory. Larger dedicated VRAM and configurable VRAM.
-
Performance improvements targeting stability and application compatibility.
For more details on these improvements, including any known issues, see the RemoteFX vGPU information in the RDS blog.
The new role, tentatively called “MultiPoint Services,” lets you use the functionality of Windows MultiPoint Server in your Windows Server deployment. MultiPoint Services lets multiple users, each with their own Windows experience, share a single computer. When a user logs into the shared computer, they will see their desktop – not a standard, shared desktop.
From a technical perspective, when you install the MultiPoint Services role, we also install RDSH. The two work together to provide lower total cost of ownership, as well as the ability to use orchestration tools to manage RDSH sessions and other devices.
For more details on this new feature, particularly an FAQ, see the Windows MultiPoint Services information in the RDS blog.
