Nice, and I don't see a big difference in perf test run time. There's also https://trace.cafe for viewing traces online.

Metrics.stopTracing() collected a Chromium trace, parsed it for
event-duration extraction, and discarded the raw buffer. The
underlying flame graph wasn't available anywhere outside the
in-memory metrics, so investigating regressions in CI required
reproducing them locally.
Write the raw trace to ${WP_ARTIFACTS_PATH}/traces/<name>.trace.json
when the env var is set, and upload the directory as a CI artifact.
The resulting file opens directly in Chrome DevTools Performance
panel via "Load profile…".

The previous category set (devtools.timeline only) gave the top-level event tree but no V8 sampler data, so saved traces opened in Chrome DevTools showed opaque "Function call" boxes with no JS frames inside. Match the categories Chrome DevTools enables when recording the Performance panel so the saved traces produce the same flame graph users see locally. Default trace file names were sequence-only (trace-1.trace.json, trace-2.trace.json, …), which made them hard to correlate back to the test scenario when downloading the artifact. Derive the default name from the Playwright test's titlePath instead, with a counter suffix when a single test produces more than one trace. The auto-generated trace name now strips any "(N of M)" iteration suffix from the test title, so repeated runs of the same scenario share a name; subsequent writes are skipped via a file-existence check. One trace per scenario is enough to investigate a regression and avoids inflating the artifact size. Also wire startTracing/stopTracing into the Loading describe block, which previously only collected Navigation Timing API metrics with no flame graph. Playwright's titlePath leads with the project name and the spec file basename, both of which are noise once the artifact directory is already scoped to a single CI run. Saved traces opened in Chrome DevTools or speedscope showed minified single-letter names (the production build mangles identifiers), which made the artifact much less useful for investigating regressions. Walk every CPU-profile call frame, fetch the corresponding source map over HTTP from the running wp-env server, and rewrite functionName in place to the original identifier before serializing the trace. The fetch URL appended ".map" verbatim to the script URL, including its WordPress ?ver=… cache-buster query string. Apache treats foo.js.map?ver=… as a request for foo.js with a query, so the "map" body was actually the JS source — the JSON parser threw, the resolver bailed, and saved traces still showed minified names. Strip the query/hash and append .map to the pathname instead. Also drop the in-test counter that was producing per-iteration files (Hovering-Inserter-items__Run-the-test-2 .trace.json … -11) for tests that loop startTracing/stopTracing internally. With one canonical name, the file-existence check naturally keeps just the first iteration — same dedupe behavior we already had across tests. Empirically titlePath here is [fileRelativePath, ...describes, testTitle] — there's no leading project segment. Slicing the first two elements dropped the outer "Post Editor Performance" / "Site Editor Performance" describe along with the file path, producing names like "Loading__Run-the-test.trace.json" that collided across spec files. Each scenario now passes a stable, hand-picked identifier — e.g. post-editor-first-block, site-editor-type, post-editor-inserter-hover. The reused type() helper kebab-cases the metric key it already takes. Also adds tracing to the site-editor Loading describe to match post-editor. Stable IDs let downstream tooling (a future structural-compare script) match traces across runs without depending on test-title heuristics; making the parameter required forces a deliberate choice and removes the test.info()-dependent default. stopTracing(name) now treats a falsy name as "skip writing." Each iteration loop computes the name conditionally — i === Math.floor( iterations / 2 ) && '<id>' — so only the middle iteration writes its trace. The early iterations (cold caches, unwarmed JIT) and the late ones (which the metrics also discard in some scenarios) are no longer saved as the canonical sample. Tests with a single trace per test (the type() helper variants and the site-editor Typing scenario) keep their unconditional names. The two perf-comparison branches (PR vs base, or trunk vs fixed ref) shared a single traces/ directory and overwrote each other's files. The uploaded artifact was effectively only the second branch's data. Resolve each branch's SHA after fetch, propagate it to the test runner via WP_PERF_SHA, and write traces to traces/<sha>/<name>. After both branches finish, drop "head" and "base" symlinks at traces/<role> -> <sha> so downloaded artifacts are navigable without consulting the workflow metadata. (Artifact upload dereferences these, so the uploaded zip will contain duplicated content under both names — small cost, much nicer human UX.) actions/upload-artifact dereferenced the head/ and base/ symlinks on upload, so the uploaded zip carried a full duplicate of every trace under the role-named directories (~140 MB extra per side). Drop the symlinks; write traces/manifest.json with role -> SHA mapping instead. Downstream tooling reads the JSON, humans can open it to see which folder is which. The manifest carried role -> SHA mapping for both branches, but the comparison-side SHA is already recoverable from the workflow run's context. All downstream tooling really needs is "which folder is the current run." Drop the JSON manifest; write a one-line traces/HEAD file with the head branch's SHA. The comparison flow runs the suite against multiple branches into a shared artifacts directory. To stop the comparison branches from overwriting the head's traces, suppress trace writes on them via a new WP_PERF_NO_TRACE env var set by the perf script for all branches after the first. This removes: - The SHA resolution loop and branchShas map. - The sha argument plumbed through runTestSuite as WP_PERF_SHA. - The per-SHA trace subdirectories in Metrics.stopTracing. - The traces/HEAD marker file. The artifact layout is now flat: traces/<name>.trace.json contains the head branch's traces. The current commit is recoverable from the workflow run that produced the artifact. Resolving source maps inside Metrics.stopTracing was adding ~10 min to the perf workflow (fetching ~94 maps over HTTP from wp-env and parsing each as a SourceMapConsumer, repeated per saved trace). Save traces minified instead. Copy the head branch's build/scripts/**/*.map files into the artifacts directory so the uploaded zip carries both. A new bin/resolve-trace-source-maps.js CLI takes a downloaded trace plus the artifact's bundled build dir and produces a *.deminified.trace.json with original function names. Runs in under a second per trace (filesystem reads, no HTTP). The bin tsconfig type-checks .js files via JSDoc; my new resolve-trace-source-maps.js was using implicit-any parameters which broke the static-analysis CI job. Let's merge and iterate. I think there's a lot of interesting things we could do with this, like comparing traces and maybe tell PR authors about new call stacks added, selectively run perf tests on PRs etc. |

Save Chromium traces from the perf tests as a CI artifact, with bundled source maps and an offline CLI to deminify them.
Why?
Investigating a perf regression required reproducing it locally. The trace data was discarded after metric extraction. Now you can download the trace from a CI run and open it directly in DevTools / speedscope / trace.cafe.
How?
Metrics.startTracingenables the V8 CPU sampler categories so JS call stacks show up in the flame graph.Metrics.stopTracing( name )takes a stable scenario ID (e.g.post-editor-first-block). Each iteration loop saves only the middle sample (i === Math.floor( iterations / 2 ) && '<id>'), so each scenario produces one trace.WP_PERF_NO_TRACE=1), avoiding overwrites in the shared artifacts dir.bin/plugin/commands/performance.jscopies the head branch'sbuild/scripts/**/*.mapfiles next to the traces, so the uploaded artifact is self-contained.bin/resolve-trace-source-maps.jsreads a trace + the bundled maps and writes a*.deminified.trace.jsonwith real function names. Runs in under a second per trace, nonpm run buildneeded.Testing Instructions
