Fascinating, and good catch! Interesting that skipping the await appears to resolve it (i.e. not waiting before opening the modal), I wonder if it's due to re-renders or reloads due to the entity being re-fetched 🤔
While this fixes the issue for me when an image block is at the root of the document, I still see the focus loss issue if I open the modal from an image block that's within a gallery block:

I ran a couple of E2E tests to debug, and the trace shows this sequence:
The bug is probably not Gallery-specific. An Image block hits the same failure if focus is on a crop handle or something else when closing. Because the element that currently owns focus is being removed from the DOM. Browsers need This means the fix is rather in |

Okay, so I traced that as well. Tweaking that doesn’t fix it either 🤦🏻 The crop surface auto-focuses, the discard So with those two doors closed the original commit 8cb0077 is closer what we'd need to do to fix it. Whether it's worth it, I dunno. I'll get that up so we can appraise. |

I like this approach and the addition of an onClose callback, and it has nice symmetry with the onUpdate callback, so it feels good to me as an API.
Working nicely at the root level or nested in a Gallery block now.
Just left a couple of tiny notes: one about whether we need a useCallback, but just nits really.

No need to rename this as it's an internal function, but from the modal's perspective onClose() isn't necessarily something that restores focus. It could be the consumer fires off a UI state change of some kind (like a UI effect, etc). So, and not a strong opinion, we might call this handleClose or something like that.
All that said, calling it closeAndRestoreFocus is clear about the intent of the callback, so it's likely fine to leave it. I'm just thinking out loud!

What?
Restores focus to the Crop toolbar button after closing the media editor modal launched from:
Why?
When the cropper is opened from the block toolbar via keyboard, closing the modal currently leaves focus lost instead of returning it to the control that opened the dialog.
The expected modal behavior is to return focus to the launcher when it still exists.
