@tyxla We can merge #61521 as is, it's now green. And keep this PR open and update it with a better solution. I think we are very close, it's clear that there is a missing dependency on the block IDs somewhere. Just not at the place where the PR is adding it. The bug is probably something like when a function Cursors() {

Is there a reason we're not using getBlocksByName here? Also, should we fallback to the default root '' when core/post-content block can't be found?

Good idea, I refactored this to getBlocksByName and removed findBlockByName.
A little downside is that the unit test now does excessive mocking of the store: previously we only needed an easy mock of getBlocks, now we need to mock getBlocksByName, too.

Looks like useResolvedSelection will return a new function on every render now, while previously it was stable across renders. Both useRenderCursors and useBlockHighlighting have resolveSelection in their effect deps, so they'll re-run on every parent render, not just when blocks/awareness change. So it may be worth wrapping the return in useCallback to restore the previous stability.

Oops, this is fixed now. It even caused infinite React update loops in the editor.

Should we return just client IDs? It looks like IDs are all that's required for resolveBlockClientIdByPath. The whole block's value would change with any attribute update. Do we need to re-render for each attribute change?

Good idea, we have a selector called __unstableGetClientIdsTree that returns exactly the structure we need, a tree with just clientId and innerBlocks. And has only state.blocks.order as a dependency, i.e., ignoring attribute updates. Unfortunately it's marked as deprecated 🙃

I think the getClientIdsWithDescendants should give is similar results and even simplify the resolveBlockClientIdByPath code.

Turns out that this refactoring was not that easy 🙂 getClientIdsWithDescendants is not usable because it returns a flat list of all descendants, without the tree structure. But to resolve the Yjs path we need the tree.
getBlockOrder is also not very good because it returns only one level of the tree on each call, so we need to call it multiple times. But then the result can't be memoized.
So I ended up:
- moving the
getClientIdsTreeselector (and its sibling) to private and using it inusePostContentBlocks - still exposing the prefixed
__unstableversion as a public selector
The result is that usePostContentBlocks now depends only on state.blocks.order and state.blocks.byClientId (for block names) and doesn't depend on attributes. Updating a block attribute won't trigger a rerender of the overlay. Only a change in the block tree structure will.

@Mamaduka By the way, the __unstableGetClientIdsTree selector triggers the following warning:
wp.data.select( 'core/block-editor' ).__unstableGetClientIdsTree is deprecated since version 6.3 and will be removed in version 6.5.
which claims that the selector will be removed in version 6.5, which of course didn't happen. Can we remove it now? I don't know 🙂

Summary
Turns out there's a race condition when joining: awareness can arrive before the new block lands in the DOM.
useRenderCursorsthen queries[data-block], finds nothing, and never retries, so its deps don't include anything block-related. The cursor stays hidden until the collaborator moves again.The fix should be simple: subscribe to the block tree and add it as an effect dependency.
